22re Rod Knock

22re Rod Knock
91 extended cab 4x4 22re. 228k miles. Manual
Faint knock at idle. Nothing really loud but consistent. Speeds up when rpms increased. Just as faint if not fainter at higher rpms but faster and speed proportional to rpms. Thinking it's a rod knock because of consistency and location of sound. What else could it be? How easy is it to drop the pan and replace all rods with new ones? I've done tranny, engine, CV axle swaps but nothing this precise. How long should it take? Any good videos/instructions?
Also screeching. Goes away if I Rev the engine sometimes. Not at high speeds but from idle to third gear. Not a belt but sounds like coming from engine block. Sparatic. Thanks

Can you tell if it is positive in the bottom end? I seen pulleys, belts, and other things that can seem like a rod knock as well. For short periods of time, remove one belt or all and replace them one by one and see if that removes or adds the noise.
If it is a rod knock, you will most likely be into a rebuild or engine swap. A rebuild is a slow process just due to waiting on machine work, parts, and your time to work on it. If it were me and I was doing a rebuild, at best I would consider 2 weeks for a rebuild and that would be pushing it.

I just bought an 82 that was making obvious clacking noise. I adjusted the valves and it was still there, so I listened closely and it seems to be coming from the bottom end. With as much oil leaks I still see after replacing the valve cover gasket, I am set on rebuilding the engine, hoping the crank is not damaged enough to have to replace it. I'd say get ready to rebuild it yourself, it's not going to be too bad.
