22re rebuild problem

22re rebuild problem

names mike. just had a 22re rebuild drop in my 94 toyota.it runs fine except for at idle it has this knocking.its gets quieter is as start to drive i can hear in first gear.after that it goes away.i took it back.the machanic said its fine its normal. i dont beleave him so i checked the compression.150 to 160. on all four.so thats fine right?now im going to check out the oil pressure.waiting for a fiting in the mail.im worry that a few thousand miles from now some thing will go wrong.i never worked on cars and i plan on keeping this one for a long time.any one have any advice or clue to what it might be.helps please.

Make sure the crank pulley is tight, alternator and other brackets are tight, etc.

22re have very bad valve ticking...i have the same problem!!! you can have him check the valve clearence to make sure!!!

not if the valve tips and adjuster screws are in good shape, and clearance is correct.

i have only heard ONE that did not tap. that was a "rebuilt" one that upon inspection had the clearances set to 0.
ALL OF THE 22R MOTORS make a valve ticking (rocker slap) noise.

there will be some noise, but it should be more of a sewing machine buzzy kinda noise.
ticking, anything with some miles on it and some wear on the rocker screws and valve tips is going to make some noise, absolutely.
Zero valve clearance they usually run REALLY bad.
tapping or knocking..... no bueno.

The injectors are often pretty loud too.

I replace the adjuster screws on rebuilds, and tip the valves enough to make them nice and flat.

bah: No matter what shape they are in if your valve clearence isnt correct it going to make a tapping....heck even if the clearence is right your pro still going to here them on the 22re!!!

I never heard 22re that didnt tap!!! Just small price to pay to have such a bad arse motor.
