22re performance build help??!! 1987 4runner
#1
Hi guys, im a newbie to this site, so bear with me.
i have a 1987 sr5 4cyl 5speedrunner. Dude hit a deer with it and i bought it cheap. I have had 2 other gen1 4runners but never did any motor work on them.
My new one needs a motor rebuild, but i have a couple of general questions for you guys.
1-if i build a 22re with a engnbldr 261 cam will i notice a difference?
2-how much help will i get with a header?
3-Adj cam gear, titanium valve accessories?
i know the thing only has about 105-110hp, and also realize that it ain't a v8 or even a v6. Realistically, will i appreciate a 22re with a cam and header, larger valves and headwork, or will i be just as happy with a stock build 22re?? Will be a mostly daily driver on the highway, some stop n go traffic.....am in High Point NC......also know i will get 20-23mpg at best
may haul a trailer now and again, 235-75-15 tires right now, may go to a 30x9.50, dont think ill run 31x10.50 tires
any info will be greatly appreciated

as for the new cam ya you should be able to notice stuff like better throttle response, probably better torque and horsepower. dont remember the specs..theres a thread some where here where someone has a 22re build with data on different cam shaft configurations compared to stock. think the better one turned out to be an lce cam.
for the header you should get like 5 horsepower extra or something around there. upgrading to aftermarket usually means the aftermarket allows better flow. also just doing a full upgrade to your exhaust system will improve the performance of your engine.
if you go for head work and valves will also help of coarse. allowing more air to enter a cylinder will help but with this you might have to upgrade to bigger injectors. not sure what size or anything. if you dont you will probably run pretty lean for a while until you do something with fuel.
there a lot of other guys on here who have done plenty of different upgrades. just look around. some of them even say how much power they gained.
