22re adding turbo

I have a 89 toyota 22re. I have recently rebuilt the motor and I'm adding a turbo(don't know the year of the truck it came off of). Can I use the stock harness and computer or do I need to find one for a turbo. Any answers will help

Ask Google he knows alot.....just messing with you man. I'm pretty sure you'll need the harness but you could always try to start it and see what happens.

I am thinking about doing this as well. I would have never thought the harness though only about the possibly the computer for injection and maybe injectors. What is the harness going to?? waste-gate maybe?

Thanks and good luck. Be sure and keep us posted on what you have to do would like to learn from you here.

I'm pretty sure the waste gate is pressure actuated, the only thing I can think it controls is fuel pressure.

The waste gate is pressure actuated. I'm going to try my stock harness with turbo computer. Hopefully it works. I will let you all know when I'm done

you need to use the turbo harness with turbo injectors with turbo afm if u want it to last the 22re injectors are even to small for it. same with the 22ret its injectors are to small for it. if you rebuilt the 22re with 22re rebuild kit my advice to you is run the turbo ecu with your harness with 7mgte injectors (cause with your harness they will be plug in play as on the 22ret harness u'll have to use your injector pig tails and soder them on) and run stock 6psi with the stock(turbo) afm without the turbo afm u will melt down the engine cause it will always run to lean. i've done hunder's of our of research for turboing my celica.

I have the turbo intake on it that came off a 87 yota but I have a stock harness and computer off a 89 and I had to switch out the injector connectors . I did notice that it was black smoking a little bit but everything else worked fine

So I'm wondering if I run 91 octane and put ngk spark plugs in it if it would help burn the fuel better. Right now I have some cheap auto lite plugs in it and 87 octane.

What ecu are you using? Injectors? And air flow meter?

I take it your running the stock 22re ecu? And turbo injectors and that won't work 89 injectors are big impedence so your opening the injectors twice as much as you need to be. You need a turbo ecu and turbo afm and ull be fine but I mite add the stock turbo injectors are too SMALL even for a stock turbo motor you MUST go to 7mgte injectors sence your runing higher compression so inturn your.making more power so you need more fuel! So u need to swap your injector plugs back to the 89's and get a turbo ecu and afm and 7mgte injectors!!!!!! Or sooner then later your going to have a blowen engine that you won't beable to even rebuild!

i completely agree on making sure you're using the correct injectors, the stock turbo ones at stock boost WILL work, in good condition (ie. new, or rebuilt).

Ecu- I think you already are.... but you HAVE to run the turbo ecu. otherwise your computer will not be accounting for boost, and will run extremely lean. lean=knock. knock=death for motor.

Harness- I'm not sure on differences between the harnesses on a stock, and turbo 22. unless there is a different wire count at the injector, or afm, it should be okay using the non turbo harness.

AFM- has to be the turbo afm as stated above.

other things to consider, and I'm definately not a pro with the turbo 22, but is the fuel pump different in the factory turbo runners? if so, you should also upgrade to that, I'm not sure if your stock pump can provide enough fuel.

It's a turbo motor, you should definately be running premium (91oct), and i highly recomend ngk COPPER plugs gapped to spec, they wear out a little quicker, but from experience, provide the best spark under boost.

ecu's are different from a turbo to any re ecu. stock turbo injectors will work but you will always run to lean!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! your running 1.5 compression ratios high then the stock turbo motor so its kinda like runing more boost then stock on a turbo motor. so like i said get a 22ret ecu asap it will plug and play switch your injector plugs back to the 89 plugs and get a set of 7mgte injectors once you get the injectors send them to a injector cleaning shop and get them clean and then install them. then get a turbo afm and install that then get a wide band and a boost gague.

if you what to see what you need and get and why go to my post 22ret swap to see what your getting into!!!!

Ok thanks and yes I am running a stock ecu. But can I still be running lean if I'm black smoking. Also I have a knock but it sounds like valves. It's a new head and I let it run for about an hour and adjusted them but its still there. Also where can I find a turbo ecu. I have one but it only has two plug ins for the harness. Does that make it a 2 wheel drive harness
