2009 Tacoma ... rust after 2 months
I just purchased a 2009 single cab Tacoma PreRunner and I just noticed some rust spots start appearing on the bottom of the frame. There aren't any holes yet, but I'm still a little pissed off that there is rust to begin with.
Is this normal? I know there was a recall on the older Tacoma's but are the newer ones supposed to rust too? I thought they would have fixed this problem. What would you guys recommend I do?
Is there any way I can get a new truck out of this? Or should I just sand it down and put that por 15 stuff on (read it on another rust thread).
I'm really mad that I found rust on my two month supposedly long lasting Tacoma.
Any help or advice would be appreciated.

go to the dealer and show them. If they're half-way decent people, they'll take care of it. If that goes nowhere, I would see what I could pursue with the high-ups at toyota USA. If all that goes nowhere, I think its time to break out the por-15.
Just my two cents.

Yeah thanks for the heads up, I'm taking my truck in on Tuesday. I'm hoping for a new truck exchange because two months and rust is ridiculous I think. Or am I pretty naive to think so?

My guess is that at best the dealer may spraybomb it and bs you away.
Personally, I'd rather POR-15 it.
Also, new Yotas ain't crap compared to older ones, of the friends and co-workers I know there are 2 Tundras, 4 Tacomas, and a 4Runner that range from a couple months old to 2 years old with what I consider major issues that aren't being fixed and they are either being traded in or sold.
I'll keep my older paid for "quality" Yotas til they die or I die!

Hey guys, thanks for the advice, and here are a few photos. Also there are a few other spots on the bottom part of the frame with tiny spots of rust.

And here are a few more ... it's mostly sporadic random spots of rust, I really wish I didn't buy the truck at night now and I actually checked the frame before driving it off the lot. Am I just worrying too much about this? Again I'm pretty new to this so I'm not sure if I'm making too big of a deal out of this.

Okay guys, well the end result is it's surface rust, and they say it's normal frame stress from driving. Frame stress causes chipped paint I guess. OH and debris from my smooth roads I've been on.
I went to the Toyota dealer near my house for that assement, and they're forwarding me back to the dealership I purchased my car to see if they want to do any "goodwill" stuff and get the rust off with a new paint coating.
How lame.
If they don't do any good will stuff, I'm going to sand it myself and put on that POR 15 ... hell I might even put on POR 15 after they touch it up. Rusty POS.

I dont think he is making a big deal out of an expensive purchase. What are the new tacomas, in the $30K range? I would be pissed too. My 86 4Runner doesn't even have "chipped paint" like that.
If you pay top price, you demand top quality. If customers wanted rusty trucks, they could buy some 95 tacomas that have spent their lives in Ohio.
Go back to the dealer, and take a look at some of the other trucks they have on the lot. See if those trucks have any rust like yours. If so, then you are stuck. The rust on the trans is normal, since its bare metal. It does also depend on where you live. If you live where they salt the roads, you should know better than to have a problem with rust.

Hey thanks for the briefing on if it should be normal or not. My truck wasn't exactly top dollar though, just the 4 banger tacoma (I'll save the top dollar 30 grand 4 wheel drive v6 for when I'm out of school).
I just noticed a lot of tacomas in my area with no rust spots there, so I was in a state of "WTF, WHY IS MY NEW TRUCK RUS... WTF?!"
Anywho, it's good to know some of you don't think it's that big of a deal. I'm still probably going to take it to the dealer to see if they want to repatch it up, and I'll probaly still POR 15 the out of though ... because I'm OCD like that.

You should coat a new frame anyways.. Isnt that the best time to do it, before there is a problem?
p.s that doesnt look that bad. But I would insist that they make it right.

Hi, just dropping in to let you know my 2006 Tacoma with 45,000 miles is already rusted the entire frame and also other areas. This is not normal wear and tear at all, I honestly believe this cannot be a localized issue given the problems I have seen and read with Tacomas in general. Also, I am ever buying a Toyota again.
Thank you for reading.
and PS the rust started about 6 months after I bought it.

Yeah things just went downhill when they started building Toyota trucks in America. My truck is the last generation of trucks built in Japan (89-95). These have fully boxed frames and my 1994 truck has no rust on the frame. The only rust is on the stuff that I added to the frame (front spring hanger, frame tubes, etc.) My truck has the best of both worlds, the frame and body from Japan, and the the powertrain from a Tacoma, as well as the SAS.

And don't forget that rocks that fly off the tires hit the bottom of the frame. When we bought a 03 Tundra it was only a few months before we had surface rust. Just have to keep an eye on it, wash it lots and every so often get oil sprayed underneath to slow the rust process OR get some POR-15. Any vehicle has rust after a short time. My uncles 09 F350 SD has rust on some welds after 4 months.
