2002 2.7 engine questions

We have 2, 02 tacomas with the 2.7 litre engine. My wifes is the extra cab and I have the standard. My question is my wifes seems to have more torque than mine. I under stand that because of the weight difference the ext. cab would maybe set up a little different power wise so, what I'm wondering is. can the timing be adjusted, and if so how? I am fairly mech. inclined but I have no idea how to work on an engine without a distributor. Is there a performance chip available for these engines as well? Just curious. Would also be interested in some info about a small block chev. swap with auto. trans. thanks for any and all help. newbie here, not to toyota to this forum.

I bet the gear ratio's are different in them, and that will play a big roll in power

Thanks for the response, ya I thought of that but, we have the same size tires and both are 5 speeds, and even though mine doesn't have a tach. the engines seem to sound the same noise wise at freeway speed. Taking off from a dead stop at a stop sign I use the 2nd gear test and the wifes takes off a little easier. Another thing I forgot to mention is accelerating onto the freeway mine kind of acts like a turbo. it seems to lag some and after a certain rpm really starts to come on power wise, not as strong as a turbo coming on boost but there is a noticeable power increase, almost like it has the wrong cam in it.
