2.7 3RZ spark knock

Need some help. Have a '96 Tacoma 4x4 - manual transmission. It's down on power - that's not a joke, it's worse than it was. I run 93 gas and still have a knock problem. Have added "booster" and still knocks. Also, have a
FP401 code and have replaced damn near everything associated with that. New fuel filter. Light will not go off. Has had two fuel pumps and TPS's
installed by a shop- this for info only. Everything I can find on this kinda goes
back to a possible timing issue. I can get info on how to check the timing via
Mitchell, Haynes and Alldata but no one wants to tell me how to retard or
increase the timing if it is incorrect. Have tried a "colder" plug with no success. Haynes refers to loosening a bolt to turn distributor as you would on older engines but I don't see any bolt or way for the distributor to turn.
Does the timing on this model have to be set via laptop or someother data
type connection? Taking it to a shop may be the final resort, but I would like to have an idea of what's going wrong. $$$$$$$ if it goes to the shop.
Thanks. Forgot to mention - 278K miles
