1st Gen 4Runner Spoiler or Wing

Has anyone tried to fit an aftermarket, or later gen rear spoiler on the rear cab of a 1st generation 4Runner?
The reason i ask is because i am getting fumes thru the rear window when down. Is that normal? I have sealed the exhaust(welded) from end to end, and i know for sure it isn't leaking.
Any input would is appreciated. I have searched, and used google, but can't seem to find any information.

thanks,
actually i am glad i can smell it, since CO is really bad for you. If i couldn't smell it, i wouldn't even think twice about it being an issue.
I think that the design of the 1st gen creates the necessary drag behind the cab and introduces fumes into the cab when the window is down....maybe i am wrong.
To change this i was going to experiment with a spoiler, like ones found on the newer Runners. Not sure if this would solve my issue, which is why i am asking it here.

Thx

My 95 does the same...the fumes roll up the back and into the cabin. My parent's van does it also when the rear vent windows are open. I know the 2nd gen and onward came with them as an option which mine does not have...yet.

You might be able to get this to work?

I got a rear spoiler off of a mitsubishi mini van, i don`t have it installed yet, but it should help with the exhaust smell and it will help to keep the rear window clear in the rain.

thanks for the replies guys.
I am glad to know that it seems to be the design of the beast, and perhaps i can solve it with a spoiler.
I'll report my progress, findings.
BTW, does anyone actually use the rear wiper? Has anyone deleted it, and repaired the holes left behind? Just wondering if a spoiler will interfere with the wiper mechanism.

I use my wiper...and I'm sure the wipers were there on the factory spoilers so I don't see it being an issue. Check the local bone yards they maybe able to help you out.

If you talk to Kiyobrown, i know he has one on the back of his 4Runner.

No idea what it came off of though.

I had one on my 3rd gen and took it off. I honestly do not see the difference w/o it. But, just in case fumes are getting in and I can't smell them I never drive with the rear window down and if i do, I make sure to have the side ones down too. Problem solved.

Doesn't matter what windows I have open, if the rear is open you can smell the exhaust.

I put a universal fit deflector from JC Whitney on my '85:

It helps to keep the rear window clear of dust and snow while driving.

Don't recall if it helps a lot with the exhaust fumes, but I found how far down I could lower the rear window before the fumes came in.

Thanks for the plug DC.

I pulled mine off of a 2nd gen 4Runner, just had to make the brackets out of flat stock from home depot.

It helps me with the fumes, since the dogs like to stick their head out the rear window on the way to the dog park.

Hope that helps.

Between the deflector at a junkyard and the metal from home depot, it was about a $30 fix. Works great. Windows stay cleaner and the cabin is exhaust free......... Unless you open all the windows then it swirls again.

Funny DC remembered. Not much gets by him. But the only person that has said something to me about it was A.Wilson013. I helped him bend up the brackets and he has one on his shiny black ride as well.

hehehe. Looky what I found!!!

Ditto

Kiyobrown, thanks for the info, couldn't you have used the brakets from the spoiler(modified)? i am guessing there is a pic attached but stupid work blocks that stuff(common image sites). I have a pick-N-Pull near by that i can scavenge.

And thanks Roger, i can see your pic just fine, looks good.

So to the guys who have mounted these, is there a measurement you are using to line up the spoiler? Too high and i guess it makes more noise and isn't as useful, too low and perhaps not affective?

thx again.

i don't have a wing, i was going to get one for this very same issue until i got a soft top - no point in adding a wing to a cap that sits in a shed - however, when i first got the truck, the tailpipe tip was rusted off. when i had the exhaust replaced i asked them to extend the tailpipe out the side behind the left mudflap, and get the tip just a little past the body line. i wanted the tip out in the side draft, hoping the under draft wouldn't carry it up as much.

it made a SIGNIFICANT difference. now with (wingless) cap on, i can open the window 1/3 before i get some smell. and it's nowhere near as bad as it used to be. so, all of this was background to say just make sure your tail pipe is where it should be, or you may want to put a little tip on to bring it out a little more.

fyi: with the softop 3 sides rolled up i dont have a problem with exhaust at all. which pleasantly surprised me.

Very true. With the soft top on I don't have a wing, and I don't smell exhaust. Now if it weren't for these dumb Washington winters I would never put the hard top back on!
