1999 4runner cigarette lighter socket blowing fuse

When I plug in a 12V usb ipod charger, the fuse for clock/radio/12V blows. It doesn't even need to be pushed all the way in before the fuse blows.

The charger works fine in the 12V sockets.

Can the 12 V cigarette lighter socket be pulled out (to see the wiring) without pulling the bezel? I've had it off before to replace the tiny green HVAC lights, but I'd rather not if I don't have to.

What are the physical differences between the single cigarette lighter socket and the two 12V sockets below? just current rating or are different in some other way?

cant do it without popping the bezel off, its not that big of a deal though, i always start at the bottom right corner and work my way around, takes less than a minute and you have full access to anything you need to check. was the circuit possibly tapped for 12v power to anything else? aftermarket headunit, cb radio, lights? could be a simple case of overloading if so.

ok perfect, I'll just remove the bezel then.

Truck is pretty much stock, cig lighter outlet was working a month or so ago and haven't really done anything since, except for maybe try to use the cigarette lighter (which doesn't work) so maybe I crushed the contacts in the outlet.

I'm thinking of adding a voltmeter somewhere in that area so I'll try to install that at the same time. Guessing I could hook that up to the one of the outlets from the back.
