1991 SR5 4x4 Binding in turns

New guy to the posts, but I searched the topic...My 1991 SR5 X-tra cab is binding in hard (not all the way to the stops) turns while in 4-wheel drive. It really almost stops the truck. I bought the truck new and the binding has progressed to more than the normal scrubbing of the short wheel-based 4x4's and definitely more than the last 18 years. I took it to a "4x4 shop" here in Virginia (DC Area), but was not at all confident in their abilities to diagnose anything. Everything appears to be working correctly, but I know this is not normal. CV's were replaced 2 years ago, the alignment guys say the wheel bearings are OK...I'm a little stumped. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.

Thats normal on dry or high traction ground. Now if it was on ice or in mud then something is wrong.

Don't drive in 4wd on hard pack surfaces sucks as pavement, only use it on slippery surfaces. Should say that in the owner's manual

ditto...

mine pops up front pretty nice in 2wd in tight slow turns; also normal (my 93 4runner)

a little off topic:

energy suspension makes really nice bushings, it will require a realignment after messing with the control arms to install the new rubber pieces but quiets things down and makes for a slightly smoother ride. mine were only 10 years old and they were almost shot all around.
after installing on my tacoma, will using what I can on my runner; won't stop your 4wd/hard surface hop 'cause that's how it works but will make for a better ride/handling!

a bit off topic, just excited to finally get them on the truck....

2doorRunner- this is newbie tech and we don't bash over here whatsoever is that not correct? post 2 was fine and explained well-post 3 reeks of a bash yes?

Poster has obviously had some experience with 4 wheeling-18 years mentioned- and gives no indication he is simply describing dry surface binding.

I am also curious to learn more about what is going on.

sounds normal too me? i have tried to turn on pavement in 4low and all it does is fight its self, take it out of 4wd and its all fine. like most have said, shouldn't be in 4wd on high traction area's. but you said you have owned the truck since day one and its getting worse? now thats odd lol. idk but maybe your steering stops need to be adjusted? bigger tires? bad cv angles? other than that i have no idea lol i wouldnt worry too much

keep it on topic guys and play nice. A lack of searching before starting a thread is against the rules, newb or not.

new tires maybe have more grip, and on a warm day and hot asphalt they will grip something fierce when in 4wd on the pavement, it will buck hard. the only other thing i can think of is you might have play in your suspension or steering when the wheels are turned causing them to wander a hair when cranked and trying to cut a tight circle might bind things up more than normal. interested to see what comes of this

That's how I check that the 4x4 is working properly! No binding on dry pavement = broken.
