i have a 1990 4runner auto. v6 with just over 200k on it. i had some Q's about my trucks mysterious engine knocking and gas mileage.

my biggest problem with my truck is a knocking coming from the front of the engine that makes a knocking sound that gets lounder as the rpms climb. my guess is that it has somthing to do with the timing chain or belt. i would love for some help or suggestions on a solution for it. also it is underpowered and was wondering if it has anything to do with or if there were cheap solutions to adding horsepower. i love my 4runner and if anyone could help me with it id apprecaite it greatly. BTW are 90 4runners suppose to get between 12-15 mpgs?

12- 15 mpg seems a little low. You can try removing 1 plug wire at a time and see if the knock changes or disappears. Use insulated pliers and gloves while running or do it with the engine off. That would indicate a rod knock. Not uncommon in older 3.0 engines.
