1985 with 35's... gearing?
from what i have read, there are a lot of different factors. i run 35s. arb style front bumper, plan on getting a marlin crawler rear bumper. occasional freeway driving but mostly around town and 4 wheeling. should i go with 5.29s or 4.88s? also, what should i expect to pay or do you think someone mechanically inclined could figure it out on their own?? any opinions or knowledge helps! thanks

I'd vote for 4.88 for reasons stated. to do a gear swap you need a press (I use a 12ton HF), large bearing seperator, dial caliper, dial indicator with magnetic base (measuring backlash), and you will have to make a tool to adjust you carrier bearing preload.

5.29s, buy them ready to run from tg with your choice of locker installed. Then sell your stock gears on Craigslist. Less down time, professionally set, and locked.

I'm running a 22RE on 35's and 5.29's. My speedo reads 4 mph high according to my GPS. Plenty of power, zips around pretty good for a 4 banger.
But........I do a lot of freeway driving. 75-85 mph and it's tach'n over 3000 rpm. 4.88's would be better in this case.....in my opinion.
In your case you may be happier with the 5.29's and it gives you the option of going to bigger tires.
