I am helping a friend change his tranny fluid on his 05 tacoma and feel like an idiot because I cant find the spot to fill it. I already drained it and took the pan off wiped it out etc. pics would help but I just need someone to tell me where it is.

the automatic trannys hold something like 15-17 quarts of fluid. You can only get out 4-5 quarts from draining the pan. The procedure for flushing is:
1.) Drain the pan as you have already done and refill through dipstick.
2.) Remove the return line from the radiator and put it in a bucket.
3.) Start car and let the tranny pump 4 more quarts into the bucket. This will pull clean fluid from the pan into the tranny and dump old into the bucket without returning it to the pan. Then add 4 more quarts through the dipstick.
4.) Repeat #3 two more times. At this point you should have used 16 bottles of ATF.

If you don't do this, and only drain+fill, you are just diluting your good fluid with 3 times as much old junk.

good luck.

No, there is no dip stick on the new trannys, they use a ATF WS fluid that is sposed to be a life time fluid. but there is a fill plug on the side towards the top of the tranny some where.

A simple pan drain and refill wont do much...

Here's a link to the service manual:

or this narrative:

? This transmission requires Toyota Genuine ATF WS.
? It is necessary to refill the transmission with the
correct amount of fluid.
? The vehicle must remain level while adjusting the
transmission fluid level.
? On vehicles equipped with active suspension, turn the
suspension control switch OFF if it is necessary to
jack up the vehicle with the engine running.
2. TRANSMISSION PAN FILL
(a) Remove the refill plug and overflow plug.
(b) Fill the transmission through the refill hole until fluid
begins to trickle out of the overflow tube.
(c) Reinstall the overflow plug.
3. TRANSMISSION FILL
(a) Fill the transmission with the correct amount of fluid
as listed in the table below.
(b) Reinstall the refill plug to avoid fluid splash.
HINT:
If you cannot add the listed amount of fluid, do the

5. FLUID TEMPERATURE CHECK
NOTICE:
The fluid temperature should be less than 30?C
(86?F) before beginning the fluid temperature check.
(a) With intelligent tester
(1) Connect the intelligent tester to the DLC3.
(2) Select the tester menus: OBD/MOBD,
ENGINE, DATA LIST and A/T.
(3) Check A/T OIL TEMP.
(4) Allow the engine to idle until the fluid
temperature reaches 46?C (115?F).
(b) Without intelligent tester (Using A/T OIL TEMP
indicator)
(1) Create a terminals between CG (4) and TC (13)

(3) The D shift indicator on the combination meter
comes on for two seconds. This indicates that
the fluid temperature check mode has been
started.
(4) The D shift indicator will come on again when
the fluid temperature reaches 46?C (115?F) and
will blink when it exceeds 56?C (130?F).
(5) Allow the engine to idle until the fluid

I know this is an old topic, but I need to know exactly where the transmission fill plug is on my '06 Tacoma with the 4.0 V6 and 5 speed auto.

Pictures would help a lot, but the very least I need is a detailed description of where it is at and what is needed to access it.

They call it a "sealed" transmission, yet the drain plug is quite easy to find. Too easy...

I was doing an engine oil change, and without thinking, like a dumb bass I accidentally removed the transmission drain plug. I'm very sure that I lost less than a quart when I realized my mistake and re-installed the plug.

It still drives like it did before, but I don't want to drive it very far with it low like that.

I figure that, while I am at it, I might as well do a drain and refill of the pan. The manual calls for 3.2 quarts of Toyota fluid.

Can anyone here help me?

Okay, I found detailed information on another site that shows the actual pages from a Toyota service manual. Now I know where the plug is at and how to change the fluid in the transmission itself.

My next question is: How would I go about changing the fluid in the torque converter?

I haven't found anything about it by doing an online search.

It is a sealed transmission. You must ahve an OBDII scan tool that measures trans temp to fill correctlly. I don't belive there is a DIY for changing TC fluid that I have seen anyways. Honestlly, I NEVER take my truck to the dealer because I am a do it yourselfer, but when it comes time for a trans flush I will.

I have worked on the lexus is250 lately and found out about the new tranny World Standard oil that's put in place for new vehicles. They say it's suppose to be a dealer thing when it comes to change.

The is250 do not advice when to change it and one part guy said around 100k miles, and he does know that 100k is a long time. There's a method of filling it to the right level on the is250 but the amount of tranny oil to be drain is much greater than what it says on the user manual, like twice as much.

The touqe converter hold from 8-10 quarts of fluid alone you you never usaully can drain it. So all your doing when replacing fluid from the pan in the Trans is putting back the "additives" in the oil.
