Putting the tire ontop of the roof is going to put ALOT of weight WAY high. I dont know the specs on what your driving but if its much more than 3-4" over stock your COG is gonna be quiet high. But then again im biased because i had quite a tall blazer with a garage built rack with all the goodies, jack, spare, jerry can, lights, etc, and i subsequently rolled it on a major highway when everyone decided to rubberneck at some fender-bender that happened on the other side of the road. Needless to say i didnt hit anyone, but i rolled 4-5 times, snapped the rear tires off. The only good that came out of the rack and spare tire ontop of the roof was that it protected my watermelon head from getting "Gallaghered" all over the highway. But hey it looks sweet.

I would try and get something that mounts to your rear bumper or mounting it elsewhere. But if you HAVE to have a roof rack, and i wont blame you, just google "safari roof rack" and boom there are several companies that make them.

i wouldnt put my spare up there not only for added drag but that tire is really heavy...... i would put mine inside or maybe bolt up a early 2nd gen mount that swings out

Got one...

Thanks for the input. This is what I ended up getting:

http://www.rocky-road.com/4runnerrack.html

I was a little concerned with having the weight up there, but so far it has really proven to be a non-issue. I ended up getting the rack, light bar, and the HiLift mount. I really dig those gas can carriers they have though. Saving up to pick those up in a couple weeks.

My wife sure feel alot better about carrying the tire outside of the vehicle now. Even strapped in, it made us nervous.

Anyway, I dig the new rack system.

What size tire do you run? That can't be fun having to pull it down and put a flat back up there while on the trail. Nice rack though

I run 285's. I don't think my wife could get the tire up and down, she'd call AAA anyway. For me its quicker up and down than the stock strap under the vehicle. I just rolled it up the side, don't really have to lift so much doing it this way. I have the Rock Road Supersliders anyway so I've got a good step for getting to the rack.

I've been stopped a couple times since I put the rack on, guys asking me where I got it. Rocky Road should put stickers on their parts.

That's good. I just remember reading about guys who do that and then they have a hard time getting the tire up and down on the trail. I checked out the site, they are really nice racks! I want one now haha

roundtheworld,

Any chance you can post up your thoughts on the install. There's not a lot of detail on the site, but from outward appearances I'm very interested. Also, how's the durability?

TIA
