I've had my new (to me) 4Runner now for about three months and I'm pretty discouraged by the gas mileage. It is bone stock, with properly inflated new OEM Dunlops and is driven only in 2 hi. I have no idea what the computer says - I compute it by gallons on fill up divided into miles on the tripmeter. I have an easy comute of about 50 miles a day round trip. I drive about 80% highway at around 65 mph (no stop and go) and 20% city, but no heavy traffic - I usually get good long runs of green lights. I'm not a lead foot, but I don't baby it either. My worst tank was 16.0 mpg last week (I did pull a light trailer for about 50 miles) and my best was 16.7 mpg. I check every fill up and 16.3 to 16.5 is the norm. I checked a few sources like Edmunds and Consumer Reports to see what they said on real world mileage. CR says they got 16 in their test drive, but I think that was a V8 they tested.

My last T4R always averaged 19 mpg or so with no maintenance except for cleaning the K&N every year or so. I got in the low 20s on long road trips. The EPA gives better mpg ratings for the 4th gen - you'd real world mileage would be better too.

Any insite on mileage? What do you all get?

I don't know what everyone else is getting, but our 06 V6 4R 4WD has never gone above 15.1 mpg (according to computer, which people here report is not too accurate). This is for a mix of city/hwy driving.

On the other hand, we hardly ever drive it. It only has around 1,000 miles on it since we bought it in July last year. Perhaps the mileage will rise slightly as the motor continues to break in.

 

After 3 years of ownership I still get roughly 17mpg on my 2004 V6 4WD but driven in 2HI. The computer is normally optimistic so it says I'm getting 18.X MPG but I know better. When was the last time for air filter and spark plugs? What weight oil are you using? Do you have anything on your roof racks to cause increase drag? Carrying any extra weight (subwoofers, tools etc)

 

My computer reports 17 driving on LA freeways for 2hrs each day. I have steel bumper, 275x70x17 MTR's and a lift which use up more gas. On the highway it reports 18-19 if not climbing hills.

My actual (via GPS) is around 15 in the city and 18 highway if the truck is empty.

 

I have an 04 4WD V6 that has been getting between 18-20. It is mostly driven by my wife and is bone stock other than the TRD CAI.

 

What type of gas are you running? I'm having the same problem. I found this when I switched up to a higher octane and then back to a lower octane it was worse, and is still steadily getting worse. I'm using Shell gas. Kind of wish I didn't upgrade the gas. The engine alomst even lugging. I have to gear down at times.

I figure if I unplug the battery I might reboot the computer to its original settings.

I have a lift and bigger tires and I get about 17-18 in mixed city and highway driving, best I've seen on the highway is 18.5MPG and that's calculating it myself.

The computer is overly optimistic. I saw a small increase (1-1.5MPG)when I switched over to 91 octane but it took about a 1,000 miles.

 

CR's test still lists the '03 V6 SR5. They get 16, but those guys are lead foots. You would be, too if your job was to beat up on cars!

All you can do is double check everything and then take it in if it is really bothering you. My milage ranges, but is getting better as the weather warms up here. My worst is 15.7, my best is 20.5, I average around 18. I have only had the thing ('05 SR5 V6 4x4) since December so I don't know how it will do come summer.
