new taco, break in period
i just picked up a new 07 silver taco dc 4x4 trd offroad w/ roofracks and alarm. got it for 26800. just wondering what the break in period is for this engine. (its soo sad that i have no idea what the real name of the engine is. 1uz something....
) its the v6 4.0 though. and now i have to relearn all the goodies and forget about the good old second gen. which is completely different.

Its in your manual. If I remember correctly, no towing for the first 500 miles, and no hard accelerating for the 1st 1000 miles. First oil change is supposed to be 5000 miles, but many (including me) changed at 1000 (another round of dyno) and again at 5000 (synth).
Nice truck. Looks alot like mine (at least for a few more days)

Theres no elaborate break in for the 1GR engine. Just like those above said, don't tow before 500 miles. Other than that, don't beat it and don't stay at one speed for too long. Maybe do that for a month and you'll be fine.

Drive it like you stole it! The way an engine is broken in dictates how it will run it's whole life. I ran mine easy for the first 100 miles and after that I started running it pretty hard. I'd be more worried about the gears and brakes than the engine.

alright, well u have a 6 speed though. i understand that your very tempted to ride it hard.
. anyway, when do u have to change the tranny and diff fluids on these for the first time? sorry for the newb question, but its my first new car, and i didn't see it in the manual anywhere.

the exact break in period is in your manual, but i would go easy for like the first 1k...not real hard accel, etc...then after that change to another go of dino, and then at 5k change to syn...once your at 1k miles i think your in the clear to exeed 60

i let my brother drive it yesterday, and he decided to see wat it could do, i wasn't in the car, but he said he took it up to 90. it only has 350 miles. I was about to rip his head off, literally. I was PO'd. do u guys think i should change the oil or something?

Toyota uses a special oil from the factory thats designed to help your motor break in properly. I don't know why everyone is changing at 1000 miles, but honestly that does more harm than good I'd bet.
Also the 60mph thing is bull☺☺☺☺.
Just follow the manual, as was stated above basically no towing, super hard accelerations, or prolonged driving at a single speed.
Your truck will be fine dude, put 5w-30 synthetic in at 5000 miles or 6 months. Believe me, if there was any need to change the oil sooner to prevent damage Toyota would say so - in fact the dealers would say so as well (they already say 3000... but its only a money-making ploy....especially if you use synthetic).
90 isn't THAT fast, but it was definitely irresponsible on his part.
Just FYI, racing engine are broken in by running them hard (near redline for long stints) after a very very short run at low/varied RPMs with extra filtration to get any metal particles - which is done at the factory for new cars.

Not trying to start an argument, but what's your source on this "special oil" statement. Did you have a UOA done on your factory oil? I've heard this stated countless times, but never had anyone verify it based on factual data. If you've got documentation on where this info comes from, and what special additives get used, I'm very interested. It could be used to end alot of open discussions on the topic.

I follow the book, with a slight twist. I keep RPM below 3K to 500 miles, then below 4K to 1,000 miles, change using dino between there and 3,000, then full synthetic sometime before 5,000.
The auto trans is sealed, requires no maintenance or fluid changes for, uh, is it life or 100,000 miles? The book will say.
The main thing is to NOT change to synthetic too soon. The 1GR has low-tension rings sealing against hard Nikasil liners. They take longer to seat than prior generation engines.
AFAIK, there is no break-in oil but there is a break-in filter factory installed. Change it at the first oil change, too.
Oh, and never let your bro drive it again.
