A Deal for 2004 and Possibly 2005 4.7 V8 4Runner headers UPDATED

Does anyone know where to get a set of headers for a 2004 4Runner with a 4.7 V8? I've looked all over the net and can't find any and the shorties for the Tundra don't work on my vehicle. Another thing is that Doug Thorley headers will create them if he can get 20 orders. Is anyone interested?

I'm not getting a lot of responses to where I can find headers for a 2004 4Runner with a 4.7 V8 and even though I'm new to this board and I only posted this afternoon, it shows my search must have been pretty complete. Do you folks even want headers on your 2004 and 2005 4Runners (the 2004 and 2005 stock manifolds match and are interchangeable between years so the headers should match too. 2006 and up there was a change and I don't know if they would work or not)? I do. I even tried putting Tundra headers on but they are too tight on the passenger side of the engine, and the combination of 4Runner with the 4.7 V8 was just is not as popular so no one made headers for it. But all hope is not lost. Doug Thorley headers out of Riverside said if they had 20-25 orders ready to go (Doug Thorley and Jardine Performance has been around for a long time), they'd make them. That was the conversation with Frank their sales rep. from Doug's shop this a.m. I believe with the orders he will make them, and I'm willing to take that chance. I will be the first to volunteer my order for Doug Thorley 2004 4Runner headers for the 4.7 V8 and I'll put my money where my mouth is. I'll be one of the first 20. One down, 19 or so to go... Any takers or comments? I can't believe that this vehicle doesn't have an array of headers to select from - it flat out astounds me, but that is what we have to live with for the time being. Feel free to contact me on this sight and I'll be happy to give you the information I know. 1 down, 19 or so to go!

Thanks,
Brad

Great Mattmkng! I'll call Frank this a.m. when they get in (remember the time change from east coast to west coast) and see how they want to keep track of the orders. I know they have my info because I've bought stuff from them before.

I just talked with Frank (a sales rep) over at Doug Thorley headers. They will start keeping track of the orders. He would like to see 20-25 orders before he makes them, but that is a lot smaller than other companies that require 150 before it is worth it to them. To register, you need to tell Frank or one of Doug's sales people that you want headers for a 2004 4Runner and you saw this posting on YotaTech, your name, address, phone number, and credit card number. Now the credit card number will not be charged until the headers are shipped to the address you supplied. This is a win win deal in my eyes. Also, the 2004 regular manifolds fit the year 2005 as well, so Doug's headers should too! So you folks with the 2005 4Runner might look into this too. Doug Thorley Headers No. is 1-800-347-8664 or you can look it up on the net if you don't trust/believe me and call them yourself! I know it is a lot ask as far as information goes, but this will get us headers. Call Jardine Performance and Doug Thorley headers yourself and ask Frank!

Thanks,
Brad

The list has been started, I'm no. 1. If the 65 or so that have looked at this post are interested in getting headers for their 2004 and most likely 2005 4Runner, we just need 19 more for Doug Throley to come through for us and build us headers.

Thanks,
Brad

Errr...pricing? Would have helped to post this on other forums but 1rook has now covered that. I'd like to know more details -eg the projected benefit, installation issues, projected timing based on finally recieving the full quote.

Expat, I don't work for Doug Thorley, I'm just trying to get the word out that there are no headers for the 2003, 2004 Toyota 4Runner with the 4.7 V8 (which simply amazes me), but as I was looking for headers, I came across Doug Thorley and they said that with enough interest, they will build them. Your best bet to have your questions aswered would be to call Doug Thorley headers and talk with one of the reps. (800) 347-8664. Ask for Frank, but Nick can help you out too (as all the reps can).

I'm sorry. I thought you were trying to organize a group buy. My bad. Normally if someone is trying to organise a group buy they will negotiate with the supplier all the details rather than a bunch of individuals ringing the supplier. At this stage I don't see many people placing an order until a bunch of issues are answered.

Challenges include a severe lack of space with the V8 and the 4th gen engine bay due to the 90 degree block, performance expectations (eg low end torque vs high end rpms), DIY installation ease, arrangements for cats (sniff and visual test) etc.

A few people have tried different headers with no luck, over the past few years.

Anyhow, once again apologizes for assuming you were leading a charge for a group buy.

24Runna -

No, I have tried Toyota 120.com but not T4R.org yet, but I'll hit them sometime today. I was going to yesterday, but life got "lifey" on me (too much s&*t to do and not enough time...."

Thanks,
Brad

ExPat,

I know, there are several issues that Throley will have to work out including the expectations of the final product. The thing that kills me is that originally (2003 & 2004), these engines were supposed to be able to handle a 6psi supercharger, but the rods are weak. There isn't much you can do to upgrade this engine except with bolt ons (uless you come from the land of endless dollars and you feel like kicking in $5k to prepare the engine for another $5k supercharger). The thought crossed my mind, but when I mentioned it to my wife, the look she gave me said it all. She will let me do bolt ons, but thats about it. I've done some soul searching about a trailblazer SS with 396 hp and all the grunt and parts one could ever want, but I don't want to give up my 2004 4Runner that I bought new and has only 42,000 on her. Heck, she will last me ten to 15 more years at this rate! My 3 year old may learn to drive with her! I don't think the GM product will do that.

Remember though, weak rods on the earlier models means there is only so much one can do to these engines without blowing it up.

Thanks,
Brad

As I have said on your other thread Brad, I'm interested for my 03. But we do need to adrs some of those questions expat brought up. You've done some great research there and thanks for posting it. I didn't know we have a space issue to get these headers to fit. Let alone if even it's worth it. It amazed me that just by putting a high quality AFE air filter, new muffler and chopping off the resonater how much my performance was improved let alone the mpg. So to keep my v8 improving, I'm looking forward to data provided by others who know more than I do. Thank you!

4.7 Header/Catalytic Conv. 05-09 4R

Anyone used, seen, bought, thought of buying, know about these?

--Magnaflow part #'s 51323 and 51217--

Looks like a solution to our 05-09 4.7 ticks but selfish me wants someone else to take the plunge and provide some feedback before dropping $1400(ish) on these puppies...

No, and no.

Jason, let me start by saying that yes, I did buy the Magnaflows and would NOT recommend these to anyone. You can look at my review on Amazon for the details. But, in short, they are absolute crap! I got three different ones and all of them were manufactured differently than one another. And they weren't even functional. DO NOT buy them!!! I sent all of mine back and will try something different.
Looks like DT finally kept their word. But, it still falls short of what I was looking for which is a bolt on replacement. They may be worth it for someone looking to gain some power and willing to take the risk of welding the CATS on themselves. But, for someone just looking for a better built manifold than the stock one there are now a few options out there if you go to rock auto. Not to mention, people have had issues with stock replacements setting codes that they were able to remedy eventually but I'd be curious how a modified exhaust would function without setting codes if the stock ones triggered them.

Glad to hear other input/opinions if anyone has them.

Nick
