Downey Skid Plate

I'm trying to install Downey Skid Plate on my 4Runner, but it won't line up as it should be. I called Downey and talked to their technician, but still have some questions.
Does anyone has Downey skid plate? If so, could you post some pictures how you mounted it?
This skid plate is for 01-04 Tacoma, but it may fit 96-00 Tacoma with some modification, 03-06 4Runner.

Ummm...
  • Got pictures or a better description of what's up?
  • What did the Downey guy actually say?
  • Are they advertising this for the 05, or is that the "03-06 4Runner with some modification" part?
  • If it doesn't fit, and they claim it needs mods, then are you setup to do the mods?
  • What kind of mods? Drilling and grinding?

I can't align it. If I place the rear on cross member and sit the center on front diff, I have a gap on front. If I'm making some extra space (~1/4") between diff and skid, it has big gaps at the front and rear. I also have some questions how to align it with the front diff. Because all this was made without bolting it on, just placing and holding in place, I don't have pictures. That's why I'd like to see it installed at 4th Gen. 4Runner or Tacoma.

'k, but in your first post you say:
"This skid plate is for 01-04 Tacoma, but it may fit 96-00 Tacoma with some modification, 03-06 4Runner."
So... that tells me that Downey themselves doesn't think it'll fit without "mods".

I guess I'm reading this as you ordered something that is spec'd to not fit without mods, then it doesn't look like it fit, so you called Downey (they said something), and you're wondering how people got it to fit?

I know I'm not helping, but I'm at a loss to see how anyone could since the plate's not supposed to fit in the first place.

When I had my Downey Skid, it looked like this:

This was specifically made for the 03+ 4runner. The only thing required were adding two welded tabs on the front as shown (visible).

Hope this helps.

Good luck

Thanks Lance,
That's exact what I was asking for. To have an image of an actual fit.
Do you remember if skid had some space between front diff and skid itself or it touching the skid.
When I was trying to put it in, I couldn't find how to do it without making a contact between skid and diff. Second thing was that I couldn't align the skid to the center, its more to the drivers side. On your pictures your skid is also more on the driving side.

From what I can remember the back of the skid touches the cross member that ends at the back of the lower control arm. As for the off to the side of on the driver side, I don't recall. The photo may be off centered but I don't remember.

It seems the only fit is off-center, at least for me, and your photo shows the same.
I can see that it attached to crossmember. I'm trying to find if it should touch diff by inside side of the plate. Downey doesn't know/remember if it should. Logic trying to say - no, but practice saying most likely yes.

I don't think you would want the plate to touch the diff at all. How far down does the diff go? Can you post a quick photo or email/IM me? I don't recall the front diff sitting below the lower a-arms.

Thanks

That's might be a problem. I have my stock plate back right now. I'd have some time on the weekend (Sunday). I'll take my stock out and will take some pictures.
