4.0L V6 belts

Does the new 4.0L have a serpintine belt or is it still individual belts?

My wife says our 4runner is making a whine and all I can think is the belt, as all the fluids are good. If its a serpentine it will need replacment, but if its old school her dad will be in town next week and can tighten...

I just need to know so if its serpentine I can get the part ordered...

Serpentine belt for sure, and the previous post is correct, there is a TSB on the early '03s with the chirping/squealing noise from the belt. I know, I've had mine back 5 times for it, and it's making noise again.

It is a serpentine belt. It doe's need be replaced if it's cracking or dried out.
But after I went through a ton of mud out in the Mojave Road and Preserve, noise got bad, then discovered that belt was too worn and cracking after power spraying the mud off, so my buddy Brett (Master Toy tech) replaced it, and warrantied some tensioners and bearings.

Then, even with the new belt and tensioners, it kept making squealing noises. Took it back, and after a few new bearings and and tensioners, it seemed okay for a while. But would occasionally make little squeaks here and there.

Then, about a month ago, we had a huge storm come through Las Vegas on a Saturday, and had to drive through these 3' deep flooded streets to get to work. It was fun, although I couldn't see much, but afterwards- here came though loud squeaks and crap.
I sprayed some WD-40 again, thinking that might make it squeal less, on our way out to Logandale to find some red rocks to crawl. The only thing I got was a V6 that sounded like a Powerstroke 6.0!

Anyway, it drove just fine, no problems driving at all. But the noise was maddening. Then just before our last Toyota120.com trip a few weeks ago, I had them look for what else was making the noise. Lets just say that the entire front of my engine is brand new, I even got a new alternator, as that bearing seemed like it could be going out. It wasn't the problem, it still ran fine, just noisy. So we went on Toyota120 trip, and back, went on two more wheeling trips, and finally said this ˟˟˟˟˟ had to stop. So, got more new bearings, etc.....
And finally got t the right one, and it was a completely new design because of the TSB. Now I don't sound like a Ford diesel engine anymore!!

Sorry about the rambling on. But this is my story, and I'm sticking to it!!

TSB EG012-03

It calls for replacement of the tensioner assy., a new mounting bolt, assorted shims to correctly align tensioner pulley with other pulleys, and new belt.

How well it works depends on the tech performing the work. I've had mine back 5 times on this issue, and it's making noise again.

Help!!!!!

Has anyone figured this POS out??? The wife has an 03 Toyota 4-runner with the 4.0.
I am about to get rid of this dam'd thing. After replacing 2 belts and then finding out about the recall - I replaced the tensioner myself with the new updated one from Toyota.....
about 4-8K later IT IS DOING IT AGAIN!!!! The Dam'd squeel is back. I can't take this 4-runner anymore. It is driving me absoulotuley nuts.
Does anyone have a shim count or any fix to this???
Thanks -
Trevor

Well, I just ordered the year service from infotraxx on TSB's for this thing. When I read up on this before swapping the tensioner out, I didn't see anything in regards to the shims.......Now that I have the printout (5 F$#ing pages) I'll see what I can do. If someone has done this themselves and has any input, I'll take it. Thanks -
Trevor
