'08 taco gas mileage?

A friend just bought a spankin new taco 4 door 4wd, and on the drive home, (400+ miles) got 16mpg, avg 75-80 mph. I thought this was not very good? Is this normal for the new tacos>? And if so is there anythig mod- wise to increase it? Obviously driving slower will increase a little, Maybe a chip? I suggested importing a diesel motor from OZ , Or NZ, but that isn't really an option.

thanks for any input..

I thought you weren't even supposed to drive any long distances without a proper break-in?

they claim as long as you don't hold a steady speed your fine in the first 500-1000 miles of a new motor depending on who you talk to

The truck is a brick in the wind. The best mileage I get on the highway is @ 60-65 mph. With 285's I am averaging 15-16 combined city/hwy. It all depends on the road (windy, mountains). The 4.0 is not a Prius.... From other forums people have said they got 21'ish on the highway

I would say, doing a solid 65mph, you can probably get 20-21,mpg. Keep in mind though that he's got the biggest, heaviest Tacoma available (biggest cab, added weight of 4WD components). Its a truck, not a scooter. Less-than-stellar gas mileage kinda comes with the territory. But, as stated above, give it time, take it easy, and the mpg's should increase some.

Mine managed to get 20.98 a few weeks ago on a trip that was mostly interstate. The EPA highway rating is 21, so that's not too bad. When a truck gets 21 MPG, and when any vehicle gets what the window sticker says, that isn't too shabby.

I agree with the others that it should get better as it breaks in.

Thanks for all the advice.

I also thought about the break in period, and that it a 4wd, and the best mod for increasing MPG is slowing down.

He just read the epa mileage estimates and thought it should be better, and it sounded kinda low to me as well. THe reason he got rid of his V8 tundra was 16mpg.

I can't wait till we get the nice 4cyl diesels that toyota has to offer in the rest of the civilised, and not so civilised world. THose things ROCK!

i initially complained about my mileage but i think it was only because my driving was exclusively city, stop and go. i wondered if mileage would improve as i added miles to the odometer-i still dont know the answer to that. the mileage you are reporting seems low. i have 7200 miles on my truck. in town i get 15-16mpg. on the highway 60-70mph i get 22-25mpg and when i go 80mph plus i get 20-21mpg. i know this because i just drove a 4000 mile road trip (with passenger and camping gear) and calculated the mileage at each fill up. i know each truck is different, weather, fuel, loading, driving etc. but 15-16 on the highway seems way way too low. you might check with your dealer and be sure you are calculating the mileage correctly.

2007 tacoma, 4X4, auto, long bed, 4 door, 265/70/16, shell.

It will get better as it gets broken in and doing 80mph for 400 of its first miles won't help the engine.
