05+ Tacoma E-Brake

Hey all,

I'm having a weird issue with my e-brake on my Tacoma.

Anytime the brakes get wet (mainly after a wash or a good rain) and I apply the e-brake for several hours - it sticks.

For example, I washed it last night at the car wash (touch-free auto of course), parked it in my driveway, put the e-brake on.

Came out this morning, took off the e-brake...truck just sat there. Gave it some gas, truck just sat there. Finally after about 30 seconds of off and on throttle it clunked loudly and the brakes were free.

It does this almost everytime the brakes are wet and the e-brake is applied.
Usually overnight.

I told my dealership about it and they said they couldn't see anything wrong with the brakes. They said if it continued to bring it back in. It's still under warranty so I wouldn't be out any money but I'd like to have an idea of what is going on before I take it to them.

I don't put the e-brake on very hard at all, usually 3 or 4 clicks.

Any ideas?
Yes, I have searched.

Thanks,

Fink

i've noticed on my 07 if I apply the ebrake without the brake applied and on a hill, if i remove the ebrake, the brake will hold the truck until I use the foot brake. it's kinda strange cause i'm not sure if that's a feature or a problem!

Does your truck have the hill start assist? I wonder if it has something to do with that.

I don't think so.
I didn't get any of the fancy electronics, just TRD Sport with 4x4.

It's ONLY when the brakes get wet and I apply the e-brake.
I'm hoping it's not rust.

There are a few guys over on TTORA that have had this issue too, they suspect it's rust...

That's what I immediately thought of, rust. If enough people report this problem to Toyota they should issue a TSB.

Just a theory, but could the e-brake be dragging when disengaged? If so, the drums would be steaming from rain evap when you park after driving a few miles, then forming a light coating of rust overnight. A good lube and adjustment should cure that.
