Yotatech rocks!!! but this is an engine swap question
I just cant get over how insightful yotatech is but anyways..........
Just found out that I have compression in my cooling system....IE blown head...
My line of thinking is that I should put a new engine in at this point (although I cant afford it but really, who can..) so I was wondering If I should go with the 3.slow again or something else comprable in price....
I dont really give a damn about speed as much as I do about reliability so I was wondering if 22re is a viable option or is there to many mods to warrant the cost of such a swap..??
Any advice would be appreciated.
94'runner,3.slow, 172K, 4X4, auto....unfortunately
Thanks

In your situation, I think first I'd look for a direct replacement with a good warranty.
Some of the rebuilders give a 3 year, unlimited mileage warranty with their engines. I think orientengines.com may be one of them. It's either them or that Oregon engine builder. I forget that exact name.
If you want to spend a little (maybe a lot) more money but get a better engine, I'd suggest doing the 3.0 to 3.4l swap. It's a better engine, it has more power, and I would suspect more reliable. There are also kits out there to make it easier.
If cheap replacement and power are your main goals, I'd say do the 350 SBC swap. Once you get it done you can get replacement long block engines from Chevy for under $1600.

Ooooorrrr....
Go to you local "U Pull It" bone yard and get a 302 long block with all accessories, ECU and wiring harness for like $300 and throw that in. Not easy, but dependable. Hell, you can figure at $100 a short block, they are pretty much disposable motors too.

Try doing your research.. There is a lot more to it than that....
Go to the FAQ on pirate, somewhere in there they have a list of swaps and common issues.
