Yay! another rear window problem.

Okay, so my 88 4runner is having rear window problems. I have searched yotatech and I've looked over 4crawler's site but I can't find an answer. (4crawler's writeup seems to be completely electrical but I have a mechanical problem...)

The motor works fine but rolling down presents a problem. The window goes down about 4 inches, then hangs up for a second. It will then make a very audible "pop" noise and continue downward. One time I've had to pull on the window a bit for it to continue. It does not do this when rolling up.

In general the window seems a but slow to roll up or down, and vibrates a bit too.

I would like to not only fix the "pop" but go through the mechanicals of the window and make sure everything is well lubed and working smoothly. Any tips on this are greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Andy

This would lead me to believe the problem lies in the regulator. The teeth get worn out and bind together, causing the popping problem. My 86 has a similar issue.

A new regulator is the only way to fix it, unless you have a machine shop and a welder. At that point, you are better off getting a new one.

Get it from toyotapartsales.com and save about 30% or so.

So...next question... anyone know if an aftermarket regulator is available? I'm finding all sorts of aftermarket regulators for the front windows but nothing for the back. If I can avoid putting a used one in that would be great. (don't wanna have this just happen again...)

Thanks for your help deathcougar!

No one makes an aftermarket regulator for our 4Runners.

Besides that, would you really want some flimsly Taiwan junk in your tailgate? The factory ones are just barely strong enough as it is!

Deathcougar, I read somewhere that the regulator for the front windows is the same for the tailgate. Is this true?

Does anyone know if there is a way to make it a manual window? It would solve alot of electical issues.

Uh no that is completely not true. Do yourself a favor, and take apart your tailgate. THEN start asking questions. And how would it solve any problems anyways? You wouldn't be able to roll the window down without climbing through the back seats. What a PITA that would be.

I knew you'd know the right answer before I had to take anything apart. Thanks.

As far as the manual thing, I think its more of a pita not being able to get the window down at all. I think it would be a nice backup plan.

In all my years, i have not seen a setup I could not get to roll down. You can override it by applying power directly to the motor. Same general idea as the manual setup, you still have to climb into the back. But it would be a nice backup plan, maybe remove a panel and manually crank it or something.
