is it possible to have a winch installed with a stock 2nd gen bumper? How big of winch do you need for a 2nd gen? 2000lbs? 4000? 8000??

 

You will not be able to mount it to the bumper itself there just isn't enough strength. You could do something like a bullbar to mount it or I mounted a receiver to my front crossmember an the winch mounts on a plate that goes into the receiver. You generally wanna get a winch that is rated for twice the weight of your truck. So for you a 8000 or 9000 should be fine.

 

well have a multi mount winch that a made and all i did is got one of those push bars that my 91 truck came with cut a notch in one of the tubes and then welded it back toghether like a tow hitch. got some half inch plate and cut theum to fit around the bumper and then welded them strait to the bumper. and then i got a 9500 pound mile marker winch and it has pulled a guy with a 4 runer out just fine.

Thats the truth! I clipped a tree doing barely 5mph crushed the bumper and the fender. Yuengling owned us that night.

You'd have to compair the weight of the units to figure that out. Typically that would be more then you need for a mini.

 

8000lb is the minimum, 9500 is plenty, 12000 is way overkill.

 

ive got a line on a free 12000 winch.... and now realize id have to buy a new bumper.... now if i buy a new bumper to put the winch on, then do i have to add new torsion bars.....*sigh* the list goes on and on....

 

I disagree with robinhood150 - your winch selection depends on a huge number of variables.

- What kind of terrain do you expect to be winching in? Deep mud will require a higher rated winch than rocks. Search for "mire factor".

- Who do you usually 'wheel with? More often than not, your winch will be pulling the other guy. If you wheel with full-size rigs, you need a bigger winch.

- You need to consider that not all winches are created equal. One mfg's 12,000 may be the same real world pulling power as another's 8,000.

The weight of the winch and mounting will certainly pull the front of the truck down. You may be able to compensate by cranking the torsion bars, however, the ride and flex will suffer. I would recommend ball joint spacers over new torsion bars to get the best ride and flex.

Another option (and this may be the above-mentioned multi mount) is to mount the winch in a cage that slides into a receiver box (like for the trailer hitch). This would allow you to remove it for daily driving and install it just for off road, and either in the front or rear, whichever is better for the pull you are going to make.

 

kool.... ive allready got the BJ spacers.... i ended up trading some old tires for a 12000 lb winch... and just seeing if i actually wanna buy a new bumper and make my truck heavier. Having a winch would be more glamour then necessity.... im sure i would end up using it.

How much heavier are the ARB and TJM bumpers then stock?

the arb bumper is 75 pounds, the stock is about 20-25 pounds. When I put mine on with the winch it didn't make that much of a difference. I didn't need to adjust anything. I also used to have a snow plow on about 350pounds (roughly 500 pound equiv due to the canterlever effect) with no problems. I ran the plow for about 5 years.

did you install it yourself? cost? did you get it from national4wd? modern motors? used?

Warn has winch mounts that will let you keep your stock bumper...I think.

Yah I got it new from National4wd. I did put it on myself. It was easy as pie and can be done with one person. The bumper kind of sits on the front frame so you can let it hang there wihile you bolt it up. With the winch in it it weighs about 150 pouns so it is easier with two people. The ARB is designed for a warn style winch. I first tried one form costco but it wouldn't fit and had to source a warn. I got the Tabor from national 4wd as well. You should swing by on the way home from work one day and I will show you the setup.

 

They do, but they are weak. Bump into anything and they flex and dent your hood... That's precisely why I ended up building my own years ago.

i might have a line on a 12000lb winch for trading soem old tires.. need to get line and a remote...then have to buy a new bumper... not sure if i wanna spend that much.. u know

 

Ya I am in bowness. By Angle's drive in. What is the make of winch? If it is a warn it will be easy to get the parts.

 

its a warn 12,000 winch.. im just worried its going to be too heavy and my mileage will suck, and suspension will suffer
