I found a guy by me that has a headlight combo switch from a '95 4Runner.

Will that work in my '91 4Runner?

Also why do all the junkyards ask me if I have Tilt and a Rear wiper? Does that make a difference as to what kind of combo switch is on the column?

probably..
both my 4x4's had a tilt, but my 2wd was a fixed column...
i couldn't tell the difference, but i would call the dealer and have your vin handy, so they could tell you which ones to look for / or buy.

Assuming when I get there to check it out, and the '95 has Tilt, Rear Wiper and Cruise, same as mine....will the combo swithch from the '95 work on my '91?

Is the column the same on the '95 as the '91, any differences? I mean for the most part all of the 2nd Gen Runners should be the same right?

The only thing I thought may be different is that the '95 probably has an air bag and my '91 doesn't, but not sure if that would make a difference. It only occured to me since most places were asking me if I had Tilt, Rear Wiper and Criuse Control.

I don't think you'll get an exact answer to your question unless you can find someone who has done it. Have you checked the online Toyota parts sources to see if both the 91 and the 95 use the same Toyota part numbers (assuming same tilt/cruise etc config)? If the part numbers are different, doesn't mean it won't work, but it's a start.

I just looked at 1sttoyotaparts.com and you don't actually see the part numbers when you go through their menus. But, they seem to show that 92-95 are the same but different from 90 and 91. Prices are very much different too. So, my wag is that the 95 won't work in the 91.

But now I see that desconhecido is seeing somewhere that they are not. The guy wants $40 for it. I called these guys up in Cali, that I found on this site and they want $45 for it, with $15 shipping to NY, which aint bad and I know it's compatible. Might be better off spending an extra $15 to get the right one.

It will fit. I swapped a combo switch from a 92 to a 95 (for the int wipers!)

The only difference would be if it had cruise controll or not, I got one with for a truck without. I couldnt swap it out complete.....

I swapped a combo switch from a 90-95 (not sure what year) 4runner with tilt, rear wiper and cruise to my pickup truck(1993) with no rear wiper (obviously) or cruise, plugged right up. The only difference that I saw was on the 4runner switch it had a tab that would not allow me to mount the pickup steering wheel, so I used the steering wheel from 4runner. It works perfect.

Sorry I can't help much- I've never had to deal with it. I would think there is a difference though between tilt and non-tilt since the ignition switch assembly is different. But don't quote me on that. Toyota has a way of turning what I think upside-down.

All I can really recommend is look up the part numbers for the various years and options and see which are the same and which are different. But that doesn't necessarily mean that one won't work in place of the other- for instance, there may only be a style change to the lever end but the mounting and electrical are identical.

That was the tab I was referring too, Im pretty sure its for the cruise control.

Anyways they all mount the same, all wire in the same but that peice...

so as long as both trucks either have or don't have cruise... side note, all the parts in those switches are interchangable...

OK thanks, for all the responses.

It looks like the part numbers are the same, at least from the links I looked at above. I think the '95 that the switch is coming off of has CC, but I have to go take another look, my '91 has CC, so the switch should work fine if it does have CC .

Even if the '95 doesn't have the CC, that would mean the switch wouldn't have the tab, so probably it would fit right into my '91 even though I do have CC. Seems like the problem would be going from CC to non CC, since the tab would be in the way, but non CC to CC seems like it would work, since it should work with or without a tab....I think, maybe, who knows.

I will go check the '95 again and see.

On a side note, I found a guy willing to sell me and entire steering column with, the combo switch, wiper switch, tilt lever and steering wheel....all for $75...that seems like a good deal to me.

Glad to see that it will probably work and that my guess was wrong. If the steering column has the cruise, sounds like the clear stuff.

Well the CC on my '91 is on the steering wheel, not the column, which is why at first I was confused as to why they were asking me if it had it or not when I was looking for the part, but then I thought that maybe it had to do with the way the wiring was, but I guess mostly it is that tab on the switches with CC.

Still not really sure why CC would matter for the healdight combo switch, actually not sure what Tilt and Rear Wiper have to do with it either.

Tilt has nothing to do with it..

rear wipers are for 4runners.....

the CC needs an electrical connection through the combo switch, so it has extra wires... I have some pictures of the switch I was working on out there....

Yeah I couldn't figure out why they were all asking me about tilt and I would think that almost all 4Runners have a rear wiper, but I guess that answers the reason for asking about the CC.

If I had to get a switch from a non CC truck/Runner it wouldn't be the end of the world, I never use it anyway. I have found that even trying to keep the truck at 65 on a flat highway, the CC will downshift my tranny, seems like to 2nd gear, and you'll be going along and all of a sudden it kicks down and the RPM's go up to like 4,500.....so I don't like that, so I Never use it anyway. Another benefit of the 3.slow.
