Why No Serial Number

I've got a 3VZE in a 1990 4runner and the engine doesn't have a serial number. It also has pistons associated with engines after 1993. Any insight as to why the engine wouldn't have a factory stamped number on the block?

Thanks In Advance to all the insightful experts!!

I bought a 2vz-fe(camry) factory short block back in the 90's and it didn't have numbers where the original had.

Maybe your truck had a short or long block replaced from the head gasket recall.

Thanks for the info on short blocks potentially coming without the S/N stamp. I just got done mic'ing the cylinders and there is no way this block has over 250k on it; definitely leaning toward a factory engine replacement in its past.
