why does this get hot?
this past weekend i swapped my original engine that what throwing oil for my spare. its the same engine(22r). i have had my spare motor in my 84 2wd pickup and my 81 celica gt. anyway, i swapped them out. i started the engine and fine tuned everything. when i started to drive home the truck was already warm. i got alittle ways down the road (1 mile) and the temp. gauge went from about half way to the 3/4. just as i was about to pull over and shut it off it rapidly fell to about 1/4. i kept driving. alittle ways later (another mile) this happened again. it went up, it fell down, i kept driving. for the next 3-5 miles it never happened again. i figured it wasn't completly full of coolant. i filled it up when i got home.
the next day i was on my to work and about 2 miles down the road the temp gauge got amost all the way to the hot line and stuck there. i pulled over and let it cool off. i drove it back home and removed the thermostat. i put it all back together without the thremostat and drove my truck to work. the temp gauge does not come up off the cold line now. so why does this get hot like that. the original did not overheat. the thermostat worked before. my dads truck did the same thing. it got too hot and blew the HG. i don't want the to happen to mine. any help would be nice. mike

yeah either you didn't burp air out of the system or you are experiencing the infamous Temp overshoot. When the guage went from 1/4 to 3/4 (or red line) did you have the climate control set on heat? Mine will overshoot if I have it set to heat, so as soon as I see it start to rise I turn it all the way too cool until I see the guage indicate the t-stat open (holds about 1/2 and then drops back down). Then I put it back to heat and everything is fine. As stated in the post above, go to Rogers site and get the p/n for the upgraded T-stat and make sure you get all of the air out.

It helps if you pour the coolant in very slowly and sqeeze the hoses a few times. Also it's suppost to help if you raise the front of the truck up higher than the rear with the heater on.

I'll tell you what works really good
There is a commercially available funnel that has various radiator adaptors. Connect one of these using the appropriate adaptor. Fill the cooling system and keep the funnel about 1/2 to 2/3 full and idle the engine till it gets full hot. Make sure the heater valve is open. (leave the blower off so the engine warms up faster) Rev the engine several times once operating temperature is reach and pretty much all the air should come out. remove the funnel (it comes with a stopper so you don't spill the coolant), install the pressure cap, and fill the resevoir to about 1 1/2" above the full line.
This is about 99% certain to get rid of the air in your system.
If this does not take care of your problem, try another thermostat.
