The original headgasket recall was done on my 92 4Runner in 1998 with around 90K miles on it. I bought the truck with 169K with a blown head gasket as a fix-it-up and resell project. just finished the work and am slowly falling in love with this thing and don't want to sell it!

I'm guessing it's never been hotter than where the needle sits on the gauge. 3VZ-Es hate getting hot. Did it ever get super hot?

I haven't yet... Granted the pervious owner took it in for the HG recall around 60,000 miles... I bought it at 107,000 and its now around 160,000 miles... No issues as of yet (knock on wood)

My truck has never hda the HG done and teh original engine made it to 333,000 before it blew a plug out of the number 3 cylinder and it survied a few thousand miles of me beating on it with a shift rarely under 4200 rpm and frequently to 5000 plus.

Then I swapped a rebuilt engine in and it now has about 8 thousand on the rebuilt engine and it sees the same abuse and it leaks oil somewhere so its frequently low on oil, still rarely sees shifts under 4200 and more frequently sees redline because it sounds cooler tacked out. And I overheated it badly jonce when I got a pinhole in my radiator and it sprayed all the coolant out.

My truck had had the hg replaced before I got it, and were blown when I got it, at 180,000. So twice so far I know of. I have looked this problem over and over. The conclusion I came to is toyota had received a shipment of bad head gaskets "substandard" is the word they used. I guess the gaskets themselves are blowing no matter what. Anyone can blow a gasket after a overheat thats common sense. But the original reason some of them blew and were recalled is the gaskets were junk. Then some people replaced the gaskets and never planed the heads, subject to another blown hg. This issue makes it hard to buy a used motor also, I would hate to pay 750 for one and its leaking and needs 400 put into it.
