Toyota locks are not exactly hi tech either, I locked my keys in at work once, got a peice of metal banding and used it like a slim jim to open the door, I mean, you don't even need the notch to pull up, all you have to do is get something thin and push down...
On my 4runner the ignition died on the PO and he wired up a push button start, it isn't easy to see so that might make it tough for people to steal it, when you turn the key the lights all turn on but it won't crank, haha.

A floor mounted dimmer for your switch so it won't start. Easy to use, not real obvious.

Forget all that stuff...get a Grant removable/lockable steering wheel. Hard to steel it if they can't steer it. Nothing is going to stop them from towing it if they REALLY want to get it...other than Smith & Wesson.

I have one in mine. I will tell here it is. But it is very easy. Cut the power wire for the fuel pump, then take the sw. and wire it up. In coming power yo the top, then wire to the pump, then the ground for the sw. I will be able to start the truck, but you will not get every far. I.E. start then stop. I have them in all my cars. It is great, if not a herry and do not need a friend start your truck after you get back from underway. I have done that a time or two

In my 4runner, the dealership had an anti-theft device already in it. Its this little black box thing with a plastic piece sticking in it. all i know about it is the factory forgot to take it off when we got the car but without the plastic piece in the box the car doesnt start, you can turn the key but absolutly nothing will happen! i dunno its weird but i like it cause i can take the piece anywhere cause its small. Its like a ghetto alarm system of some sort.

Hello All, About ignition locks, on my 86 4runner, the key comes off even when the truck is running. Actually it comes off in all three positions: ignition, power on and lock. I don't think this is normal. Does your truck also does the same?

Once my roommate borrowed my truck. He shut off the engine and didn't turn to the lock position before taking off the key since he was unware of this problem, and next day I had a dead battery because the MP3 player and the 2 amps were on!!

no, this is do to old key and you have to have the key replaced or the ignition replaced. My celica would do that with the org. key, but the new copy key. try to have the new key made and see if that helps

I have a 2nd gen, but I have an alarm with an imobolizer, and I also have heard of guys just wiring in those blinky led lights to switches. You could install a kill switch or something along those lines.
