I am hoping to find a new dashpot for my 89 22re, I am running into a problem finding one. Anybody have an idea who might have one for purchase. I have tried several parts places and still coming up empty. I was hoping I wouldn't have to do the wrecking yard route would rather it was new.

 

I would be surprised if a "parts place" would have a part that Toyota-specific.

I did find a dealer here in town that I will try and see if they can order it, just costly going through Toyota for parts

 

Now you know the "internet" price, so you can guage how much you want to spend in town. Don't expect a "brick and mortar" store to match it.

Others have said it, but I'll repeat it here: your dash pot is probably not the cause of your idle problems. With your foot off the gas, the dashpot is not supposed to change the position of the throttle. A sticky dashpot could hold the throttle open (not good), but a missing one should make no difference.

 

Ok, and after pondering the actual purpose of a dash pot I came to the very same conclusion that being held open would be bad and no help putting this issue to rest. Thank you for confirming that. The way I understand it a dashpot is supposed to slow down the closing of the throttle and the sticky throttle is the actual issue right now but just thought I should consider all of the possible causes.

 

Since you're diving into all the mechanics of the throttle body, you might consider the "throttle opener." http://personal.utulsa.edu/~nathan-b...93throttle.pdf When vacuum disappears, the throttle opener pushes the throttle open "a little" to reduce dieseling. If that part is not retracting (or retracting erratically) with vacuum, it will hold idle up.

 

^ I don't have a "Throttle Opener" on my '92. It must be for automatics or something they started using in '93. I just went out and checked, don't have one, and it's not in the vacuum diagram for '92 but is for '93. Interesting.

You don't really "need" a dash pot so take it off see if that fix's it. I have had no dashpot on my truck 89 22re for about 6 months now. Mine was not working right and holding the throttle open. I took it off but have found no ill effects from its removal.

I was troubleshooting my idle and backfire problem when I ordered it but it turned out not to be the problem (turned out to be my TPS), so I think my old one works -- check your inbox.

 

Ya I haven't had one on since the first intake and throttle body clean out when I first got the truck. The high idle issue didn't show up until months after that so I really did not see the connection. But when you are fresh on the learning curve its good to be open minded about it. So I considered it, but given what it does it seems it would just make the problem worse.
