When does the 3.0 stop making power?

When does the 3.0 stop making power?
I recently purchased a 94 4runner with 3.0 and a 5speed with 165,000 miles. I know these things are slow but how slow? I don't have another 4runner to compare it to, but when do these 3.0 stop making power? My truck will NOT make any power at all after about 3800 and I don't think it revs much passed that either, so is this common? It says it red lines at like 5500 but there is no way on earth the needle will make it there! Also are these things supposed to be able to accerlerate up a decent hill from a 60mph roll? Just curious cause if they are I think my timing belt might be off a degree or cat is clogged or something. Any help is appreciated!

I just bought a '93 and the timing was WAY off (read 0 BTDC, should be 10 BTDC), causing it to behave like you describe. Quick twist of the dist cap, and a huge difference!
Check that, then plugs, wires, cap, rotor, filters (air and fuel), and seafoam (search to get the full story on seafoam).
Lots of complaints about power from the auto tranny guys - mine with a manual seems better than they describe.

I don't really have a problem climbing passes either. I just get a run at 5th and hold it or down shift to 4th.
Mine hasn't had a tune up in 2+ years and has 180K.

I don't think I have ever taken mine past 4k and that was climbing a hill. On the road it doesn't ever see past 3200 rpms.

There's a whole part of your motor you aren't using. Sounds like you need an Italian tune up.

You have definately got something wrong it if wont rev past 3800. Mine used to have the 3000 rpm powerband but after all my mods it starts pulling alot earlier now than it used to. I would say you are in a serious need of a tune up.

Mine is a little low on power until about 2800. Its like it hits a power band and you can feel it distinctly accelerate even though throttle postition remains the same. I think my TPS may be going bad. Anyway...it pulls to 4500 just fine. I refuse to go past that.

Ebay is your friend. I hated not having a tach, so I bought an SR5 gauge cluster off of Ebay. Twenty minutes to install, and I finally had more than just speedo, fuel, and temp. gauges!

Deffinately get a header. This will likely save you money in the long run or at least pay for itself. Better performance and you relieve the heat strain from the Driver's side head.

[Loosen up yer exhaust and intake and try it sometime. The 3.0 doesnt even wake up until 3000 rpm. There is a reason they call it hte "three grand power band"]
I thought that meant that it will cost you three grand to FEEL a powerband..!
