Whats that noise?

Hello everyone, i am new to YotaTech and Toyota. I bought the truck after it had been sitting for around 1 1/2 years and now that i have driven it a little, a loud bang comes from the front end (axle?) when i turn the wheel at full lock and move. It has recently gotten worse and i am thinking that i should replace the front axle, not sure right or left, to fix the problem. Has anyone had this problem before. If so, please help!

is it a bang, or a squeaky grinding sound, sometimes when i turn full and move to fast the suspension bottoms out...this is normal.. dunno if thats ur prob or not tho.. when i first got my truck i thought it needed cv axles

it is mostly a bang, several of them, and you do not have to be at full lock for it to happen

Personally, I'd lean towards to lower ball joints since the truck sat for over a year and a half. Also, they dont really carry much of the trucks weight compared to the upper ball joints (if it's the stock IFS) since the torsion springs are on the top arm. Given they don't carry as much of a weight load as the upper arms, any wear in them tends to be more obvious sooner, but don't rule out the upper ball joints either.
If you've got grease fittings on the joints, pump a couple of squirts of grease in them and cycle the steering wheel left to right and back a few times and see if it goes away. You can do one joint at a time to help narrow down which one may be the problem. If that doesn't fix it, at least you know the ball joints weren't the problem.
Additionally, it could be a tie rod end that is dry and binding but pops loose when the wheels start turning and take some of the stress off of them.

umm just a ball out in the park there, but mine use to do that and i took it in for the steering recall (any local toyota dealer can tell you about this if you haven't had it done already) and it fixed the problem......all though there is a load of play in the wheel now, but no more banging.

i went and had the steering recall thing done and it did not fix the problem. However, i will check the ball joints and grease it if i can.

All I have to say is that when you have a problem with something that moves, most likely the problem lies within the parts that move- yes, that's a tongue-in-cheek sort of thing, but logic still takes precedence at the mechanical level.
CV joints 'click' when they are going out... and 'pop' when they're gone.
If it's a 4wd and you're not in 4wd, and it still 'pops' it's probably NOT the CV/axle shafts, differential or propeller shaft.
