what year is this 4runner?

okay.... This doesn't mean you can't get it registered but the DMV will give you a hard time, asking for affadavits, statement of facts, bill of sale, who it was bought it from, etc. They will research it and if things come back clean, as in not stolen, it should be able to be registered and will probably only need emissions and CHP vehicle inspection.
If it comes back as stolen, and you have the bill of sale, name of who it was bought from and such, things will get even more complicated and you could possibly lose it.
Either way, expect a lot of hoops to jump through. It shouldn't cost any more to register but will take longer.

How do you know it is a truck VIN and not a 4runner VIN? Is that according to DMV or your insurance? If the VIN is attached at the front of your dash at the driver's side lower corner of the windshield with rossettes, and that cab appears to be the same cab as the rest of the 4runner body (not grafted together), then I would wager that it is actually a 4runner VIN. The only reason you should care (and you SHOULD care) is that if it is registered as a 4runner, you can register is as a passenger vehicle instead of a commercial vehicle in California, which is much cheaper. Also, if you are into that type of thing, you can legally lift it a bit higher than you could a truck. The easiest way to tell how it is registered now is to look at the plate. California passenger vehicle plates will by default have the sequence "1ABC234" or much earlier, "ABC 123". Truck plates will have only one letter, and the rest will be numbers.

Also, if the PO had it registered- then you can just transfer the title. Don't worry about telling the DMV about all the different details of your rig. If it is registered as a truck (again- look at the plate), then you can go back later and show them (with the top bolted on) that it is a passenger vehicle and get your reg fees reduced.

yep, dug deep and found out that toyota made EFI/IFS 4runners starting in October of '85 turns out it was vined as a truck, because they actually made IFS trucks in May of '85. all is good and the registration went through fine..
