What is this and where does it go?

I finally bought my first 4runner.Its a 95' 4WD automatic

Runs great but the 4WD will not engage. There was also this crazy ratteling noise under the drivers side floor board. I crawled up underneath and there is what looks like a dicconected shift linkage. The truck was running otherwise so I unscrewed the bolt and pulled it off. Noise stops but I know this goes to something. I'm slowly doing all my maintance to this beauty as I learn but I have no idea what this is or where it goes. Any thoughts?

I've also purchased two manuals and searched everywhere. I cannot find a diagram of the transmission.

Um..that would be a piece of the shift linkage, since your 4x doesn't work, its probably directly related to that. Its been a while since I worked on my sis' 4runner, but I'm pretty sure that's what that is.

Pull the shifter boots/housing and look from the inside.

4WD is easy to fix. Check the vaccuum lines coming off the diff, check the plug on the diff. Did you lock the hubs, if you have them. How can you tell 4wd isn't working.

We can't see/tell where you took off that linkage. Check the service manuals.
