What to watch for, 1st gen runner

Hey guys,

Tomorrow morning I'm off to check out a 1988 4Runner with a the 22re 5 speed. It is supposedly in nice shape (it better be, given that he's asking $4500!!!)

Are there some special things I should watch out for? I just sold my 93 pickup so I have an okay feel for the Toyota trucks but especially with respect to the drivetrain - any telltale signs I should look for?

Thanks alot.

Starters, some older Toyota's have a finicky starter in which they click but dont turn, but are still perfectly fine. Mine has this problem so I always carry a hammer on me in case this happens and if it does this, I get out hit the starter a couple soft times with it and it normally starts up ok. I can't remember the name of the problem but something sticks inside the starter and hitting it loosens the problem. Another issue that I've heard others have is with their exhaust manifold because the 22re's can get really hot the monifold bolts loosen and form an exhaust leak never usually a huge issue but a real nuisance, good luck with the runner dude, and remember the 22re's LAST FOREVER!!!

Look the frame over really well, bring a hammer or at least a screwdriver so you can see how rusted it is. Especially check where the frame rises before the rear tires, that is a trouble spot. Make sure the rear window works.

If it's the original motor, might want to take a look at the timing chain/plastic guides.

You might be interested to know, there is a turbo runner SAS, new head gasket, lifted, q78 tsl's, bumpers, tire carrier, sliders, can back, the whole deal, up here in MA for $4200, for what you would get it would be worth it to take a day or two off and drive it home. If you were interested and needed a place to crash, a ride from an airport or something, let me know, I will hook you up.

If it weren't for the fact that I just bought a runner, I would beg, work, or sell my organs to buy this truck. It is an amazing deal.

Wow, that's a pretty SWEET runner!

I don't really need a hardcore offroader like that, though. I'll leave it for someone else Also, I really don't want a turbo.

Good call, intrepid, on checking out that area for rust. I know my 93 had that crap bad. In fact, I'm really glad that the guy who bought it is taking it to Mexico

Do the rear windows fail often? I will definitely check that out. I have a feeling it will be tip top though, since he said he has had body work done.

Also, it has a new motor

I'll post some pics for you guys when (and IF) I get it!

Okay, I really love this smiley and I just have to use it...

Bring a magnet to check areas on the body for metal, who knows how much body work has been done.

You mean to check for what *should* be metal to make sure there's not bondo and crap all in it?
