What is this sensor (pics)

Hmmm.....sounds like what mine did before I replaced the ECT...the idle bouncing that is. The temp gauge is probably your thermostat. Pull the broken sensor out and see if it's kinda greenish and rusty.
Oh! And to pull the codes, there's two terminals on the diagnostic thingy at the passenger side wheel well. It's a little grey box with a flip up lid. I think the terminals are TE1 and E1, but that's probably wrong. There's threads on pulling the codes, anway. You just have to jumper the two correct terminals with a wire or paper clip, turn the key on to ignition, and the check engine light will flash a certain number of times.
Better yet, here's the link..

Thanks Thook, your advice was extreemly helpful!!! This is the little trouble maker.. I just went out and baught one for $70.00 at the stealership.
The cooling system got replaced as well as the engine. I did all preventative maintenance including new hoses cooling and thermostat.

It looks like the ECM coolant temp sensor or it is the one for the overdrive on A/T transmissions. What it does is reads the coolant temp and prevents the transmission from going into O/D until a certain temperature. So basically their is two coolant temp sensors. I believe the black is for the transmission and the green for the engine but I could have them vice-versa.
