What is my rear end gear ratio?

Hi all,

I have a 97 4runner v6 4x4 and need help with my final rear end gear ratio. The tag on the door says A/TM A03A/ A340F
One source tells me a 4.10.
Please advise

Thanks,

One way to check is to jack up the back end and and check how many times your tire turns in relation to your drive shaft.

If its 4.10 then your drive shaft will turn a little over 4 turns to your one wheel turn.

Turn your a larger number of times to get it more accurate. 20 wheel turns instead of 10. That kinda thing.

you can call the dealership with your vin number and axel code and they might be able to tell you. You can also pull the drive shaft off the third mdmber, and there will be a color painted on the end, that will tell you too. I have no idea what color is what, but I am sure you could find it with a search.

Not to steal the thread but while we are on the subject of rear gears. How do you go about measuring the rear gear like as if you have it out and it is in your hands?

I mean like telling if my rear gear is 7.5 or 8 inch? Is that just the diameter?

2wd (5lug wheel) and IFS 3rds are 27spline 7.5"

any 4wd 79-95 is a 30 spline 8".
