It's when the clutch IS pushed in. It's coming from right behind the steering wheel/dash area

Does it sound about the same whether or not the truck is moving?

you can't hear it until the ticking stops when the clutch is pushed in. When you're just coasting in neutral clutch in, it's what you hear, no ticking, just a spinning sort of "whooshing" sound.

I think it would be best if you used a high quality phone/ camera and took some video of the problems.

Dash area makes me think speedometer but mine sounded like an angry swarm of bees in there. Throwout bearing noise for me was more noticeably down by my right foot.

I'm going to take a better more thorough listen to it tomorrow. See if I can get a good video. Thanks for all your help folks.

It's a rod knock 😑

Took it in for a diagnostic- it's a rod knock. Looks like I'm headed for a swap fellas.

Still confused about how pushing the clutch in sounds like a rod knock.

It's a separate issue, the ticking is a knocking actually..

yep. Now to figure out the best possible way to swap. Guy told me I could drop the pan and roll the bearing as long as the tab hadn't bent over or been just sheared off, or it doesn't just look like black death in there but that seems like a long shot. Not a repair they'd do in the shop since it's not promising.

Honestly, the best thing to do is to pull out the engine and either get it rebuilt or replaced, taking care of the clutch at the same time. I would pull the engine and transmission together and deal with them out of the truck. You’re 100% it’s rod knock? That is a dull thump from down low by the oil pan area. It’s not a tick from the top of the engine.

yeah its the second mechanic to verify apparently. The job itself is the struggle in terms of costs at the moment. I don't want to go with another 3.0 so if it's the 3.4 then ugh.....

buying any 30 year old toyota especially with a 3.0 is a crap shoot.
Toyota had my 97 tacoma with 20,000 miles for 7 weeks when i thought it was the throw out bearing. They rebuilt the transmission twice, guess what it came back with...the same noise it started with.

I would say buying any 30+ year old vehicle is a crap shoot, regardless of brand or how good of a car it was when new. A lot happens to a vehicle over 30 years.

The truck looked to be in overall good condition in the picture you posted. What do you think you could get for it while it's still running? If you do that and take the money you're not spending on the rebuild, you maybe could get into something in decent shape that can give you some good service. This might be a truck for somebody with the time and garage space to pull the drivetrain and go through it. When they get through, they'll have a nice ride.
