What does this sound like?

Hi, long time reader but first time poster here. I had a rebuilt 22re engine put in about 4K miles ago, and it makes this knocking/clackety sound only on hot restarts, doesn't really do it when it's cold. It usually makes this sound for about 10 seconds then goes away. Any ideas? Thank you in advance.

Also it seems to run well with pretty good power, and gets about 20mpg still. I adjusted the valves at 500 miles and already had the guy who rebuilt the engine take a look at it, and he replaced the timing set but it's still making this noise.

Did he replace the hydraulic tensioner?

I'm not sure, he said he replaced the timing set and cover. Would the hydraulic tensioner be part of the timing set or does that only include the chain, guides, etc?

Could mean chain and both gears, could mean chain, gears, guides and tensioner. You'll have to check with him.

I'd start by doing a physical oil pressure test, do you have a mechanical test gauge?

Only on hot restarts? Sounds like low oil pressure. The hotter the oil the thinner it gets. You said it goes away after a few seconds. if you raise the rpms does it go away faster? What oil weight are you running? Might be too thin to begin with.

Thanks for the replies. That's what I'm thinking too, maybe a weak oil pump? I'm running 10w-30. Once I rev it and it gets pressure it goes away and won't make the sound again until I shut it off for a few mins and start it up again.

I also confirmed that the hydraulic tensioner was replaced.

The oil pump in my last truck was replaced at probably 30k miles. Ever since then, I had the same problem, though not nearly as bad as yours sounds. Even when hot at idle the pressure would drop significantly less, but it wouldn't make any noise. In the summer I ended up running 20w 50 just to keep enough oil pressure.

I would verify it is oil pressure related and then replace the pump.

What kind of oil filter are you using? You need to use a good one with an anti-drainback valve, or the oil drains out of the filter into the pan when you shut the engine off. I had a Bosch oil filter do that, except it was cold starts when it was noisy. I put a Fram filter on and it went away. Also, unless you live in a cold climate, you can use thicker oil. I run Castrol 20w-50 here in Southern Cali.

I have to jump on the thicker oil group. I just switched mine from 10-30 to 15-40 last night and the engine is definitely quieter. Next time it's getting 20-50.

I also switched from the Toyota 190915-YZZG1 filter to a NAPA Gold 1348/WIX 51348 and the noise at startup has decreased. I can't say what change led to the noise decrease because of changing two things at the same time but I have to say the anti-drain back valve in the WIX is at least equal to the Toyota part.

What exact Fram oil filter are you using? Just their bottom of the line 22r replacement? It just seems weird that someone actually likes a Fram filter.

It was the Fram PH3614 Extra Guard, the problem filter was a Bosch 3330 Premium Oil Filter. I don't use the cheapy bottom line filters on anything. I wrote Bosch about the problem with the filter, but never heard back. We had a lot of problems with Bosch Platinum spark plugs in the shop too, even had one come in while the Bosch rep was there.
