just wondering if anyone was successful in selling their removable top after deciding to get rid of it. I am planning to get a canback and have absolutely no space to keep the removable; thank you apartment living.

also, does anybody with a soft top worry about the security of their 4runner?

Ive heard that first gen 4runners with the removable tops are one of the most stolen vehicles haha. I wouldnt leave anything of value in your truck, and you might want to set up some kind of kill switch.Ive heard of people setting up kill switches on the fuel pump and on other things and they just turn the hidden switch off so it cannot be started and taken, i dont think anyone smart enough to figure that out would be stealing an older 4runner?

I'd find some way to keep that hard top, even a storage unit if I had to. A soft top would be an easy way for a thief to get in so I wouldn't plan on keeping a good stereo or anything of value in there. There are plenty of people looking for those hard tops as well, I see them on my local craigslist about once a month or so.

I'm sure you could easily sell it assuming it's not beat to hell since you live in CA. Around here it wouldn't be worth anything because there are hardly any 1st gen 4Runners left because of the salty roads in the winter.

Plus, what are you going to do if the soft top gets ripped or something? I hear rain won't stay out......

(And, Justin......2nd gen's don't have removable tops....unless you're like 4hummer.)

I'd probably just get the soft top repaired. the hard top is in near excellent condition. it could probably use a reglued headliner, but the wiper motor works and all the windows are in great condition. i guess i'll just wait to see if anyone wants to buy it. what's a reasonable price for the top these days?

i did that already. one is free, one is $60 and one is $200. Seems like a pretty big range. They all seem like they are in the same condition, except for the one for $60, which has one broken sliding window.

keep your stock top, you'll be putting it back on ;-)

If the gutters and paint are also in good shape, go $200. You can always lower the price if it won't move at that.

i just put a can back on a few weeks ago, so of course i've been trying to make the truck theft resistant. i was going to install an alarm this week (instead i'm having a head gasket repair done) and a second kill switch direct in line to the fuel pump relay. you could also buy a lojack system.

i took my hardtop to a friend's house who has some extra storage, and offered to store it for me. I wrapped the entire thing with 3 rolls of saran wrap to keep the crud off it, and rested it on a couple sawhorses. i may want it back on come next november, or if someone robs my canback.

I've seen hardtops cut to become open air like a softtop. They remove the sliders and hi-rise rear window, and cut out the side fiberglass that runs between, so you have the two rear pillars and the top surface only. Maybe you can advertise it like that, take a picture and do a little photoshop mod to give people the idea they could use your top as their 2nd top.

i'd think pricing is regional and based on availability, if you advertise the day someone needs one, then good timing. If i had to buy another to replace mine, I'd be willing to pay $100. I recommend keeping it, but if not, good luck with your sale!

I'd have to agree with the rest of the group saying find a place to store your top, even it if means someone else's house or a small storage place.

For security of the runner, throw a kill switch in and get a locking center console. You could move your stereo from the dash to the locking console, as well as leaving anything else of value in there. Then if you really wanted, you weld the console to the floor

I agree too. If you are stuck in apartment living (me too) its a bad time. It'll never be in a private parking area. The fun of the open air doesnt seem worth the constant worry.

thanks for all the comments. i've decided to hold off on it for now until i'm in a better situation to actually enjoy it and not worry about it.

Good call. My only suggestion was that if you're parking underground, you could anchor 4 hooks in the roof above and suspend it above the truck. Fella I know did that with his YJ lid, really nice too;

-Installed 2 roof rack rails on the top with BIG custom steel washers underneath.
-Put 4 hooks in the concrete above his parking spot, 1 small pulley on each
-One large hook on the side pillar beside his spot
-Back into position (spare against the wall!)
-Hook 4 ropes through pulleys to the roof
-Pull up, and tie ropes to hook.

When he got home, he'd lower the lid back down and clamp it inside quickly with c-clamps. Jeep secure.
