Weird Temperature Issue.

My truck is a 86 carbed 22R, it's got a 150k miles. Here's the issue. When I start the truck from dead cold (this doesn't happen if truck has already been warm) like when I'm on my way to work in the morning. As the truck warms up the temperature won't only rise to where it normally runs (about 1/3 of the way up the gauge) It will continue to rise up around the 7/8 - 15/16 side of the guage. It's never gone into the red but it had gotten close. Now if I notice the gauge climbing I can push the clutch in and stab the throttle and give it a rev and than the temp will fall back down to normal. Once the temp returns to normal it stays down no matter how long I drive. Doesn't matter if I'm on the freeway or in traffic. I've already put 3 different thermostats in it and a new radiator (it had a small crack anyways) with a new cap. I flushed the system when I put the new rad in. When the truck is running the fan spins. And I'm not losing any coolant. No white smoke, No water in the oil. SO wtf could it be? 3 faulty thermostats?

Sounds like a gauge issue.

These temp gauges are not the best. Try cleaning the sensor as I see hard water build up on the senor causes issues. Pulling the cluster and tightening the screws in back can help and cleaning the ground in the drivers kick panel next fuse box. Might try burping the system as well.

Last night I got a chance to clean all 3 sensors (I dunno which one goes to the gauge) going into the engine near the thermostat housing. The 2 on top were both pretty gross and after I scrubbed the corrosion off I noticed that they were no longer brass colored on the tips. The 1 that goes in sideways in front of the thermostat housing wasn't as gross and was still brass colored after cleaning. On my way to and from work today, it was dark and cold with 0 traffic both ways (so this can't be a fan clutch issue), the gauge basically did the same thing. It didn't go as high as it has in the past before dropping down to a steady reading, but it still popped up to maybe just over half and than went back down. I didn't have time to get into the dash but I guess that'll be my next move.

My temp gauge stopped working a while back, I ended up getting a mechanical gauge from my local parts store and using that I stead. I just threaded the thermo couple Into the port right by the thermostat and now have accurate temp readings on my gauge

I also pulled out the stock oil pressure sender unit and replaced it with a mechanical oil pressure gauge.. The process is really painless, the threadlets are there already it's just a matter of unscrewing the old sending units and replacing them with the gauges sending units... My truck gas 500k+ kms and I didn't really trust the gauges anymore anyways. Good luck whichever route you go!
