Has anyone ever waterproofed their Alternator? And what I mean by that is waterproofing the Voltage Regulator and Rectifier? Would it be like placing some type of sealant over the electronics? I have had to change a few out cause water has splashed on them, I can't even wash my engine down with out having to ruin an alternator. The rectifier shorts out and starts pulling current from the battery when the engine is off. You can tell cause the alternator is warm/hot to the touch. I have alternators from NAPA and they are definitely not built like the OEM Denso units. Those were bullet proof, and you could hose your engine down and not worry.

 

Due to the need to let air flow circulate to cool, you're hands are a little tied when it comes to waterproofing.

I guess if I were you, I'd be a used alternator of a wrecker, replace the brushes and ditch the NAPA alt.

I've done it many times before with the engine off and running with the Denso, never had a problem.

 

you need a better brand. I have taken mine apart and cleaned it several times.

 

I pressure wash the mud, grit and sand off my Denso alt, and never had a problem beyond the brushes going at 280 000 km (dunno if it was ever rebuilt).

 

Same here. First one @ 450,000 km went dead after a day of muddin'.. until I ran the garden hose on it (with the truck running) and she came back.

480,000km now and still good. Original too! I'm only the second owner, and the original was the Shop Foreman for a Toyota dealer, so I've got all the maintance records! Get an OEM unit - wrecker or new.

 

It shouldn't be the water killing it, usually it's the mud that f%$&s it all up and grit. For my old 82 i built a little sheet metal box almost ( about 3 inches clearance) and drilled tons of holes in the metal so it just helped keep big gobs of mud out , but allowed the alt. to vent some heat water still ran over it, worked fine

 

It's the water for me, I don't offroad mine. This aftermarket Krap is just cheaply made junk. I'm tempted to take mine apart like jsn_stockard, see if I can make it better somehow. Anybody running Mean Green Alternators?
