Water vs Trans Temp Guages

A friend of mine gave me a autometer water temp guage but since i already have a coolant temp guage i used it as a trans temp guage is there anything wrong with this? about how they read? due to the difference between ATF fluid and coolant? Also whats the transmission temp suppose to be? Mines running around 180 driving and about 200 sitting in the driveway (on a 90+ day and with a front mounted tranny cooler) is it suppose to get that hot?

What did Autometer say was the difference between their coolant and tranny temp sending units?

Sounds like normal temps to me.

I'm using a tranny temp gauge for water and it works fine. That ATF temp sounds fine, mine is about the same.

The gage itself should be identical except for the faceplate. As long as you know what it's for, it's all good.

All it does it takes the temperature of whatever fluid the thermometer part is installed into. You could use it to take the temperature of your cooked steak if you wanted to.

I second that!! All the temperature Sending units are the same, They all work off resistance.

kinda like comparing an oral to a rectal thermometer... either one only reads the temperature of the surrounding environment. they are interchangeable (with a good wash ) it's just a matter of knowing where it was stuck and what is the normal temperature in that environment.

200 a/t fluid temp sounds a slight/tad higher than I'd like to see, but isn't bad considering the a/t fluid passes through the radiator.

*sorry for the bad mental image*

I put mine in the cooler line before the cooler. I made a place for the probe out of this "T" from Ace Hardware:

Thanks for those pictures. I was wondering if teflon tape was needed in the tee fitting.

I'm adding a tranny temp gauge to my Isuzu Trooper.

There is a special teflon tape that you are supposed to use with oil, I think that it is yellow instead of white.
