I have an 88 4x4 pickup 22re with MT. It starts EVERY time when it is cold. But if I leave it in the garage with a heater on it won't start unless I give it a shot of starting fluid (I know, not good for it). Also, if I run it for a while and shut it off it will start right up. But if I let it sit for 30 minutes or more then it wont start again without the help of starting fluid.

Now I do have an o2 sensor code that will come on and then turn off while I am driving it periodically. I ordered a replacement but am still waiting... But that wouldn't affect my start up would it? Other than this code and the stupid starting issue the truck runs awesome! No issues driving at all. There doesn't appear to be a high idle upon startup though... Thoughts? Thank you!

 

check your fuel pressure i had the same problem for about a year didnt think it was the fuel pump because it ran fine after it started. After i learned how to check the fuel pressure correctly to check if the pump would hold the pressure after the truck turned off i noticed that the fuel would drain back to the tank in 2-5 sec. Changed the fuel pump and now it works perfectly every time no more leaving me stranded at the store waiting for it to cool down.

Check the fuel pressure before the fuel filter to get an accurate pressure test. My truck had the fuel filter a little plugged that it would hold the pressure there.

 

What he said ^^^ check fuel pressure. Plus could also have a vapour lock.

 

Fuel pressure is good. I actually even changed the pump about a month ago. I took the tank off my parts truck that I was stripping. That truck didn't have any issue starting. And even after the switch I still had the same issue...

 

Check your valve clearances, mine where to tight and I was having a identical problem.

 

Okay, I'll try that. I adjusted them early in the process of some of the work I have done on it. Therefore, I assume it is possible I was too aggressive in the adjustment... I'll let you know what I find. If there are any other opinions please advise. Thanks

I replaced the temp switch and still am unable to get it to fire after sitting post-run. I tried to start it and it wouldn't go. I then tried again in a minute or two and it fired right up... I am confused but don't want to just live with it like this. Keep in mind it fires right up if cold! Any additional info someone might have would be much appreciated. Thanks

The Cold Start Injector Time Switch. Maybe you need to replace that too.
