VERY hard start

Okay so I need some help with my 88' pickup with the 3.0L. When I go out to start my truck in the morning, it takes forever to fire up. I have to keep pumping the gas like an old V-8. The motor has been rebuilt by toyota, previous owner had it installed before I bought it. Since then, full tune up, new distributor. Any ideas what's wrong with it?

pumping doesn't do anything but maybe work a sticky throttle plate loose, which iss a non-issue for starting unless the IACV is plugged up or not working. Does it idle up and down correctly once started, this indicates the IACV is probably working as intended?

Proper cold start proceedure is in the owners manual, IIRC it's "hold the throttle to the floor" which pretty much just opens the throttle plate.

FSM, has the trouble shooting chart(under engine section) and tests for the various components.

Cold start injector, circuit opening relay, fuel pressure/pump..

Back in the day when men were men and trucks had carburetors, pressing the gas pedal worked the accelerator pump. If your choke wasn't working correctly, you could enrich the mixture by pumping the gas. Or you could flood it. (I say "good riddance" to carburetors.) As Co_94 indicates, we left that all behind when we got fuel injection.

Also "back in the day," "tuneup" meant condenser, points, and plugs. Today, I have no idea what "tuneup" means; what did you get?

I'd start by checking the timing. While you're at it, put the inductive pickup on each plug wire to see that they're all firing evenly. Using your meter, check the Cold Start Injector for continuity. All easy tests.

Thanks guys. I will check my cold start injector this weekend and see if it is working properly. By tune up, I meant that I have replaced the plugs, plug wires, cap and rotor, air filter, fuel filter and PCV valve. I have also replaced the distributor recently because when toyota rebuilt the motor, they used the old distributor which had about 280,000 miles on it. Obviously, I reset the timing afterwards. As far as the idling, once started, it will idle at around 1200 rpm for 5 minutes, then it will dip to 400-500 rpm until I give it a little gas. Once it has warmed up properly, it purrrrs like a kitten 800-1000 rpm.
