valve noise

My valve are ticking pretty badly, i just adjusted them last night and it helped a little bit but not a whole lot, it sounds like a diesel when it is at low RPMS, any thoughts to what i should attempt to do next to fix my problem?

From: Bryan Tx,
22re or V6? If it is a 22re it might be that the valve cover bolts are too tight & the rockers are hitting the cover. What gap did you set them to? Did you adjust them warm?

adjusted warm, valve cover bolts are correctly torqued, its a 22rte, intake at 0.20, exhaust set to 0.30.

how many miles on it? may need new adjuster screws and nuts and maybe the rockers/cam are a little worn as well. all of this plays a factor in how loud that valve tap will be. what did you use as a torque setting for that valve cover? also keep in mind the more the valve cover grommets and gasket are worn, the closer it gets to the rockers as well. so they may need to be changed as well.

From: Bryan Tx,
that is alot of valve lash. My 22re is set at .08" & .010". Maybe the turbo models are supposed to have more but that seems like too much. I would expect them to make a ton of noise set that loose.

im a crazy canuck i use the metric system. so yeah 0.08" and 0.010" are what i used, there are 383000kms on the truck but only 40000kms on the rebuilt motor, the cam was reused though so it has a pile of kms. could that be my problem?

who rebuilt the motor? doesn't mean that they changed out the adjuster screws and nuts or resurfaced or replaced the rockers.

the head is new from toyota so its not a rebuild, the block and all that jazz is rebuilt though, everything in the head is 40000kms, except the cam.

a new head usually does not include the valve train assembly.

take one of the adjuster screws out and look at the side that is on the valve itself. if there is two flat spots that look similar to an hourglass then they really should be replaced. it will be nearly impossible to look at the rocker faces because the head bolts would have to come out to get the rocker assembly out. but I would inspect those screws. I'd be willing to bet the guy didn't replace them.

if you wind up getting new screws make sure you get the nuts too and only buy OEM direct from the dealership. they are cheap.

Check your timing chain. If its hitting the case it will sound like a rattle. Take valve cover off and look down the driver side with a flashlight. Make sure the guide is in-tacked.

adjusting screws are fine, and the chain guides are made of metal so
