Valve adjustment & Idle questions

Valve adjustment questions:

1. I know my valves need adjusted and I've read a bunch of posts about the subject. However, some posts mention shims and some don't. Where exactly are the shims within the valvetrain? also, where do you get your shims from & what is an approximate cost - especially given you don't know which you will need when you start.

Idle question:
2. From my understanding, the idle is set with the transmission in Park (mine is an auto). Well, my runner idles great in Park (around 750 RPMs), but when you put it in Drive and drive a while the idle drops to around 500 RPMs. This is w/o the AC on - with a/c on the idle still seems low (around 650 RPMs). if you put it in P, the idle goes back to around 750 RPMs. Is this normal, and if not, any idea what is causing this?

Thanks & have a great Labor Day weekend!

1) 22RE doesn't use shims. 3.0 uses shims. You check the clearances, write them down, then take the old shims out (so you know the existing size) and based on clearances, add or subtract to get the new shim size.. Buy em from toyota.

Shims

Shims are interchangeable, meaning to say that, when you take one from say the no.2 Cylinder exhaust side and replace it with a new one.

You can still use that one that you've taken out (given it's the size you need) on say the no.6 Cylinder intake and so on.

One good thing to do, is to take the shims, (new ones before you start) and (old ones as soon as you take them out) measure them with a micrometer and write the measurement on the shim itself with a Sharpie, it helps streamline the process and keeps you from hunting around for the right size.

The best place to pick up shims is the local junk yard / pull your part, a bit of caution though, if you go to a junk yard and get them, most shims are not interchangeable from engine to engine, 3VZE's will not work in the 3VZFE, the 3VZE's are bigger in diameter.

You may want to adjust the idle up a little , Maybe 850-900 in park
As for the AC, there is a fat plastic screw on the passenger side fender closest to the fusebox where all the hoses are, Once the engine is warmed up turn the AC on and turn that screw and idle should go up or down.
