Use factory starter relay or ford solenoid?
I’ve got an 89 4Runner with the 22re in it. Hasn’t run since 2006. Working on getting it running and it looks like the factory starter relay is either weak or dead. Turn the key and I get a click from it. Hook a wire from the trigger on the starter direct to the battery and I get a thunk from the starter.
Any particular reason I shouldn’t just go with a ford remote solenoid and skip the factory relay altogether?

I bet that there is nothing wrong with your starter relay. However, it may have been WIRED WRONG FROM THE FACTORY. I discuss it here:

It would help if you can share where and what your starter relay looks like because your 4Runner year is transitionary and schematics/wiring may vary.

The ground wire on the battery terminal (some crappy aftermarket clamp on one) was loose. Tightened that down.
Turned the key and she coughed a few times but got her fired up and idling. Now to continue with the tune up.
