upgraded cam?

ok i have been on this subject of adjusting my valves for sometime now and still have a horrible tap at all rpm's. I have adjusted my valves numberous times as per fsm. My question is when i purchased my rig from the previous owner he knew nothing about the truck. I was having a horrible idle problem when i bought the truck so i replaced a couple of things as well as adjusted the valves while i had the valve cover off. I never had the tapping noise prior to adjusting the valves but i do now. I was wondering if maybe someone who had the truck before me put a aftermarket cam in and the specs of the valves are different for adjusting as per fsm? Causing the tapping now. I replaced the adjuster screws as well. How can i tell if it is not a stock cam? if possible?

I have a little tapping sound on my motor and I just rebuilt it with an engbldr cam, but its only on start up and its just for about 5 to 10 seconds and I believe its just until the oil reaches the head because it stops as soon as I rev it. The part you said about it not idling right could be a burnt valve, but I don't think that would explain the ticking. How tight are you putting the valve cover back on? I put mine on too tight before and it made the valves vibrate and was very noisy, the little rubber grommets should just begin to compress when you put the cover back on. When it doesn't idle right does it sound like it has a miss? Not sure how you can tell what cam it is maybe someone else will chime in!

Usually very little difference in valve adjusting specs for different cams in the 22RE. Usually you can go a little tighter than the FSM specs for a little less noise, so 0.007/0.011 vs. 0.008/0.012. If you have a stock cam to compare with, you can look at the lobes and see if they are different. Usually the stock cam lobes look egg shaped and are pretty symmetrical. The aftermarket cam usually will look different with a broader "pointy" end of the egg shape.

thanks all for the help. I have been using thicker oil due to the noise and the heat outside..lol 88T4R that is pretty much what my rig does. When i first start it it will tap like crazy for the first few seconds then get a lot quiter, but sometimes at idle it gets real loud again. I dont have a stock cam to look at to compare the lobes sorry. But i dont think it is a burnt valve due to the truck runs good.

and yes my rig at idle does sound like it has a miss.. you can only tell if you listen real close to the exhuast you can hear the miss. But its not that noticable.

the little miss at idle is probably the aftermarket cam, they don't always idle smooth!

Also check your oil and see if its a little low, mine made the noise when I needed to add in a little more oil.

It isn't really missing it just sounds like it has a slight miss because of the way the cam is, its not stock so it will not idle nice like stock will. Kinda hard to explain. Yeah I am sure it is some sort of aftermarket cam.

Get the valves too tight and you will burn a valve. Look inside your valve cover to make sure the rockers are not making contact with the cover. Check to see if your timing chain is hitting the cover, look with a light down past the cam gear. Check for bad cam lobes or a bad rocker. Good luck.
