Upgraded braking system

I want to focus on increasing my stopping safety drastically over the press and pray braking I have now.
It's an 87 4Runner 4x4 EFI 22re with all stock brake parts.
I know I can substitute pretty much every part of the system with something better. What I don't know is in what logical order the brake parts should be upgraded first.
Should I get better calipers, rotors, pads, booster, or master cylinder first?
I don't want to buy parts that negate each other like first buying new pads and then deciding to get different calipers altogether.
So where should I start on how to stop my truck better?

I would upgrade the booster and master first to the newer v6 type in the runners up to 95 I believe it is. I found mine on ebay for 50 used for both including shipping. the reason I would get that first is it will be a big improvment but if you get calipers first it will be worse. after the booster/master then I would get the v6 calipers and pads, maybe even rotors depending on how yours are. mine are so much better now. good luck with the upgrade. search ebay for 90-95 4runner parts.

I'd keep it simple first. how are your flexible lines. As those line age you lose brake pressure as those hoses will expand. What kind of pads are you running. Once I went organic over semi metalic not good. When was the last time you replaced your brake fluid as it has an infinatey for moisture plus some are less resistant to heat both heat and moisture can cause brake fluid to loose some of its performance. whats the status of your rear PSV? you may not be getting the most of your rear brakes. Do you use your parking brake? it auto adjust rear brakes everytime its used. Been mudding? brakes and sliders clean?

Once you go through the simple things first then look at upgrading. If the 4rnr in your avitar is your rig, it isn't carrying loads of additional weight (armor, winches, large tires,....)

I upgraded the brake booster and master cylinder on my 86 4Runner, I used a duel diaphragm brake booster and master cylinder from a 92-95 4Runner, it was a direct swap, no mods needed to make it work, and it made a nice improvement in braking. I will be adding vented rotors and V6 calipers in the future, so the braking should get even better.
